Post Replacement Distributors

Am I right in thinking that the distributor part number was repositioned on later versions and if a replacement was fitted by Porsche it was stamped with a number '1' ?
I seem to remember reading or reading this somewhere.
This might have only been a UK thing?

Dear Richard,
Here is some data to help answer your question,
Ciao,

1) New ignition distributors with the modified drive belt have the production date stamped (in small numbers) in the area of arrow 1. Example ("361"). The number itself is not important, however, it is important that a number is in the location of arrow 1. Arrow 1 points to the flat area directly underneath the secondary or rh distributor.

2) The production date on distributors with the old drive belt is located in the area of arrow 2. This can not be seen with the distributor installed in an engine. The area of arrow 1 has no marking on these distributors.

3) Remanufactured ignition distributors from Bosch have always had the modified drive belt installed. These distributors are marked with the letter "Z" in the area of arrow 3. The production date of the remanufactured distributors is of no importance. Arrow three is the area under the primary of LH distributor.

Basically, an unmodified or old model distributor has no visible markings when installed. New ones do.

Thanks Adrian,
When I bought the car 2 years ago I had the Dist mod done (vent pipe) my mech said it was strange that my car had a replacement dist. but not the vent fitted.
I was fiddling around at the weekend and noticed the numbers and you've confirmed what I thought.

Richard.

Dear Richard,
Yes that is very strange. Porsche require the vent kit to be hooked up with the replacement distributors.

Adrian,
I looked last night and it is stamped with a 'Z' so it looks like a bosch replacement.

Dear Richard,
Dealer/repair facility problem or customer who was not prepared to pay the extra 12 pounds or so for the vent kit. Please install vent kit and I would recommend you replace the drive belt as well.

Adrian,
the vent kit was fitted 2 years ago when I bought the car. That's when the comment about the replacement dist came up, it just sprung into my mind again the other day for some reason!!
Thanks

Richard.

Dear Richard,
I should have gone back and re-read your post. However the main thing is that the vent kit is installed.
