Post Oil change procedure

I do not mean to rehash the topic, as I have seen it addressed previously but for the life of me I could not find specifics in the an archive search. I am looking to get the details of doing an oil change on a 964. Need to know the number of filters and which ones. Also, the drain plugs etc. Basically I am trying to winterize my car...and need some guidance in terms of protecting the rubber components as well. Thanks for help in advance.

OK...one oil filter, in plain view on the passenger side of the engine compartment...two drain plugs (17mm I believe), one in front of your passenger rear tire (drains the oil tank), and another plug on the bottom of the engine block, also in plain view with the engine pan removed. I believe there is an access hole in the engine pan if yours is still in place. Best to just remove it and store it.

Be sure you have a big drain pan when you remove the oil tank plug...it gushes out quickly. Also, replace the aluminum seals that go under the drain plugs. If you don't want to soak your engine compartment with oil, punch a small hole in the oil filter before draining the oil tank. The negative pressure will suck all the oil out of the filter before you remove it. Re-tourque the drain plugs to about 40 ft./lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench, just use common sense...they don't need to be mega-tight.

Refill the tank with 6 quarts. Start her up and continue filling the tank until you've reached the middle of the safe-zone on the dipstick. Should take 10 or 11 quartz total.

Have fun.

A really good addition (instead of punching holes in the filter) to what mike has said, is: Jack the car up., take off the RR wheel, and look inside the fender, up near where the filter lives, and you will see a plug. Break this free, but don't open yet. Get the car level, put a large pan under the tank, and loosen the drain plug. Then reach up and take loose the plug behind the filter. That will give a large sucking sound, as all the oil is taken out of the filter. It was designed for this. It sounds more complicated than it is. You will not get a drop of oil messing up your engine compartment when you unscrew the filter. Also, When you replace the filter, feel free to fill it uop with about 1/2 qt of oil before installing. It won't spill.

I would strongly suggest getting a OEM Porsche filter #930 107 764 00, Mahle is another, they are a OEM supplier of filter #OC 54. Torque specs are 52ft/lbs for the crankcase drain plug, 48ft/lbs for the thermostat housing-oil tank, and 23ft/lbs for the oil filter console plug which is located in the right rear fender well.

Count your blessings the 964 oil filter is located in the engine compartment. On the C2 Turbo it is located underneath the car right between the crankcase and the hot air exit of the passenger side header. Ouch!

Is there any reason not to punch a small hole in the filter? Seems like alot less work than removing the wheel.

Mike;

When I'm in a hurry I punch a hole, it doesn't evacuate the oil as good as loosening the oil filter console plug. Be ready to use a few rags. If you can let everything drain overnight, you'll fair alot better.

Forgot: When you get finished draining & buttoning things up, pour in 6 qts. Start engine, run for about 1 min. Shut down, add another 4 qts. Take her out for a spin, get it up to operating temperatures, put on level ground, with engine idling, see that oil is 1/2 way between add and full. You do not want to over-fill.

There is a long debate to keep running the same oil in an engine, I use Mobil 1, 15w40.

I find the filter will spin off cleanly without other drainage techniques applied if I wait overnight while the engine and tank drain into there pans. This for those who have the time to wait!

Cupcar,
Do you mean you just open the two drains and the filter also drains if left to sit overnight?
This sound like the way to go if time permits.

John;

Like Cupcar said if you can wait overnight, however, additionally poke a hole in the end of the filter, (lets say 1" from the top edge) the oil will be sucked out of the filter.
