Am I colour blind ? is this car blue or silver?
I've just posted this on the 964 turbo forum, but I need some more opinions.
Either my car is Horizon blue OR it has been repainted silver. It would seem an obvious difference, but my mechanic thinks there is some blue in the colour so he will check today...but I can't wait that long.
Personally, I think it has been repainted, the photos are obviously silver...aren't they? The trouble is that each time I look at the images they seem more blue, is this wishful thinking, or has someone else seen an Horizon Blue Car and knows it's the same colour?

Polar Silver has some blue in it and Horizon blue has some silver in it.
I followed the discussion with Adrian in the 964 Turbo area and I hope your car is not repainted. Anyway, click on my 911 turbo "signature" for an example of Polar Silver (this is 100% Polar Silver - and has been compared with other Polar Silver as well as contrasted with Arctic Silver and the codes check out with the authenticity certifcate too but lighting, filming, etc. can still have an effect).
Go HERE to check out an example of horizon blue. Seems more blue than silver but has an element of silver. I was hoping to find the horizon blue colour in the silver area on that site but unfortunately it seems quite blue. So, if the underside of your hood is repainted, then the option code sticker was replaced. Can it be?
Regardless of the outcome, if there is no going back on the deal, I suggest you just enjoy what you have. Great looking car. All the best. Don't let it spoil the fun. I love those 964 turbos. Just wish that if it was indeed repainted, you had the price adjusted for it.

Hi Ran,
As you know, the colour was one of the selling points for me on purchasing this car, I love Polar Silver.
What amuses me (ever so slightly) is that the PPI brought up faults so minor that I couldn't find them myself, yet the official dealer (may have) failed to check the Data Sheet against the car!
My obvious concern is the reason for the (possible) repaint. Aside from that I'm not overly concerned, it drives like a dream.

Cool. Have fun. Thats the spirit. Besides, now you dont have to worry about repainting Always a positive way to look at it. And yes, my ONLY concern would be the reason for the repaint. If there is no going back on the deal perhaps you should just drive the daylights (or BLUES) out of it instead of investigating for darker truths !! (since, quite possibly, you might find evidence though the pass certificate from your inspectors would mean that repairs were done reasonably well atleast - I hope). Cheers.
PS: I'll be in NZ next week and will be happy the drive the blues out of it!! All the way up that 90 mile strip of beach if you want. It will break in so well if it has not already done so....

Personally, I'm on a regime of cold showers - our second kid on the way and it doesn't take Enstein to work out what will happen if the number of kids outnumber the number of rear seats

John,
I don't care what color it is...that car is absolutely stunning!
FYI...it isn't easy to change paint color and have it not show anywhere. Crawl around underneath and look at painted bits that don't show. Also check the engine compartment thoroughly. The only way to paint an engine compartment completely is to remove the engine. Peel back a bit of the soundproofing and have a peek. Also, may want to study the door jambs and hinges, underside of hood, etc. If it was repainted with a color change, you'll find it.
Man I like that car!

The mechanic says that this is either the original colour, or an a##l rententive has given it a full-blown glass soundproofing out etc repaint. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeha.
I know that doesn't completely answer the original question, but I'm a happy camper nonetheless.
As for you Ran...I appreciate your willingness to help, but this baby is a one-man car. Roll on Christmas holidays and a long open road. Might get myself a Valentine One to celebrate.

John,
What does your paint code say?
Here is my story, my car is Zermatt Metallic Silver. But when I got the car, I called Porsche customer service and was told that my car was blue. I was shocked and afraid that I bought a repainted car.
It turned out that Porsche reuses paint codes. You have to match the paint code to the correct year. In my case, it was 5555 for year '92. In new car term it means blue.
Hope this helps,
Sonny Vo
ps: I do have the certificate of auth.

My mechanic is fairly pedantic about originality and has 300 Porsches on his client list i.e. he sees a lot. He said that the paint is too perfect to be a repaint, and there is absolutely no sign of a respray in the obvious places e.g. under the windscreen rubber, soundproofing bonnet etc. To make it unequivocal I should have asked about the sticker under the bonnet.
So at the moment I can look at it two ways:
1. It is the original paint, or
2. It is a fantastic respray.
Obviously, I'd prefer number one, but I won't know until I can get back to NZ and crawl over the car myself.
Thanks for sharing your experience. You never know, we may be able to catch Adrian out for once!

Dear Sonny,
Those people are telling you stories. I have the complete list of Porsche colour codes from 1989 through 1994 and none of them are repeats. When they changed the shade they changed the number.
Just for your info, in the Porsche data there is no such colour described as Zermatt Silver on offer. There are quite a few silvers, all with different colour codes so one of these may have been Zermatt.
There is also no colour code 5555 either.
Also do not get mixed up between Porsche colour codes and brochure colour chart codes. They are different.
Ciao,
Adrian

PS: This is for John. There are some very professional paint repair places in the world and these guys can make the auto look like brand new. We have one near us. If the body is completely stripped down and done again professionally only the documention will show up inconsistencies.
