When do you consider your 964 warmed up?
I usually keep the revs around 3000 rpm's until the oil temp gauge starts moving before I drive it like it was meant to...
Is that sufficient or should I wait until the needle is in the nine o'clock position?

That's when I start to open mine up too... I think the manual says to keep it under 4k revs for the first 5 minutes of operation. I think it's probably about the same... When I notice that the oil temp gauge is moving... I do too!

My opinion is that by the time the oil starts warming, the engine is already close to operating temperature. I agree it is ok to open up as soon as the oil temp is off the peg. Waiting until 9 o'clock on the temp gage seems a little extreme.

My car rarely gets up to 9 o'clock unless I'm in slowing moving traffic for a while. It normally hovers between 7 and 8.
I normally wait about 10 mins before giving it full throttle / max revs. However, the car doesn't feel properly warmed up until at least 20 mins, by which time the gearshift has loosened up a bit as well.

while it has been colder here, the oil temp has never risen above 8 o'clock and, since putting in the front cooler ducts, now never seems to get above 7 o'clock (but the oil cooler still does open).
Once the weather gets warmer, I suspect it'll get a bitter hotter.

Yep, me too. Wait for the temp to go up to the first notch (8 o'clock) and then back down a touch as the thermostat opens. I've never seen my temp gauge up to the 9 o'clock position!! Maybe this is the same as "wimp lines" on a motorbike!!!

I wait until the oil cooler opens. Sometimes I might rev higher than 3K if its up near the second hash mark (8 o clock position) if I need to but not to 5K plus, and I never open it up or drive hard just when the guage starts to move.
I wish other cars had oil temp gauges- the corvette I had before the porsche had both water and oil temp gauges, and it made obvious the fact that just because water has warmed up (of course I'm talking about for water cooled cars here ) the oil and therefore engine weren't warmed up yet.

Its hard going off the oil temp gauge..things are so darn unpredictable! I generally keep it below 4k rpm until I get to the freeway ramp and then 'launch' her! This is generally about 10 minutes or so after starting her up!
