Post Why Some of Us Drive Pcars!

Some reasons why some of us drive the Porsches.

FYI - Duane had a money shift in his 97 C4S at VIR last October (erroneously downshifted into first gear instead of third doing about 90 going into the infamous Oak Tree corner - - engine destroyed) - has been going round and round with Porsche getting a new engine - finally picked it up yesterday. Below, he describes his feeling picking up and driving his car again - I thought I would share his comments - -

Awwww yes......I had to go to DMV to get tags for it today (2 hours, thank
you Gov. Warner) so they could test drive it. I had let the PZAFEST tags
expire while the car was blowed up and gave Ian one to take Down Under as a
momento of his USA tour.

As I pulled into the RPM facility, there were ten to twelve Porsches out
front, lined up nose to tail. Most were regular coupes or targas in white,
silver or black. My eyes rocketed to a vibrant red 993 Twin Turbo on the
lot, which clearly stood out from it's cuzin's......wait a minute...that's
not a Twin Turbo...its MY CAR !! Damn, I didn't think they had it off the
lift yet.

I go in to chat with Stan Fox, owner of RPM along with Bill Hagy, and after
about 20 minutes of swapping AutoThority stories <heh> he tosses me the keys
and says "go try it out for about a half hour...get the engine hot and then
tell me what ya think". I'm like, "It's ready to go?" He says "Yep. When
you get done we'll do one more lift inspection to check for oil leaks then
she's all yers."

Dang. This is like having a date again with an ex-lover. I'd forgotten so
much about the car in the last five months, having been used to driving a
totally boring and utilitarian Ford F150. Sure is small inside....this is a
little car. You look up to Toyota Corollas.....Turned the key, fired it up
an it barked a snappy retort outta the Fabspeed pipe, a good throaty growl.
It RUMMMMBLEEEEEEEEESSSSsssssssssssss......Clutch is stiff like a new car,
and off we go. Ho boy, this car is small........<g>.........steering feels
way too light and it's noisy. Bumpy too. Rough riding. I had become
COMMUTER MAN in the bench-seated F150, non-descript and totally boring. I
rolled out easy at first, wanting to get the oil temp all the way up to
normal. Putt-putt.....after 6 ot 7 minutes I allowed myself a crack at the
throttle...<whump>..WHOOOOOSEEEEEEYERDADDDYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! Oh yeah, this is
fun!......way fun......up there is corner - paste it.....effortlessly. Now
I remember why I bought this car. It's a scalpel in a land of butter
knives. You see a hole in traffic you want? You own the hole. Addictive.
Mine.

I noticed again too, that there is no sublety with this car. It's like a
topless co-ed walking down Bourbon Street at Mardis Gras. A crowd hovers
around it. Everyone looks for whatever reason, it creates its own carnival.
Don't want to be looked at in this car? Better tint the windows. I had
forgot the effect this has on people - maybe that's part of the attraction
of ownership, I suspect it is whether Porsche junkies wanna admit it or not.

The car runs flawlessly. Not a shake, rattle, thump, engine miss, or rough
idle. I was concerned that after a major organ transplant, the car would
never be quite the same again. Bill and Stan looked at me when I expressed
my glee that it was PERFECT with a look that said "Well, of COURSE it's
perfect! We're RPM! You expected less?"

On the way home, I'm still trying to figure out what makes this 993 C4S with
the big wing and fancy wheels so appealing. It's not smooth, it's not
quiet, it's cramped inside and it's not the fastest car our there for the
money. And it cost $ 13,200.00 to fix a bad shift at the track. So what is
it that makes it one of the most desirable cars to own? The (BMW) E46 M3 has more
power, refinement, more versatility, and costs less to repair and maintain.
For the price of a 1996 C4S I could have a 2002 or 2003 M3.

I think the E46 BMW M3 is the Shania Twain of the Sports Car World. It's
really great in all aspects....it can sing, it can dance, it can look
gorgeous in any outfit. It's wholesome, while sexy with a well-scrubbed look
that can go anywhere and be right at home, offending no one.

If the M3 is Shania, the 993 Wide Body Porsche is Angelia Jolie. Raw,
unpredictable, rough around the edges, with a sweaty, viseral quality to it
that says, "Boy, if you get hold of me you best know what you got in yer
hands 'cause I'll rock your world". It has Tattoos. Some days it has
manners and some days it doesn't. Don't like me or my lifestyle? Who
cares!? And it has - hands-down - the world's best ***, especially in red
leather hot pants.

Chuck and Duane

I used to write for a living. Now I manage other writers.

That piece is very well written.

Thanks for posting it. It made my afternoon.

And made me long to drive my car, which is tucked safely away from salt for the winter.

I share the sentiment. Oddly enough, my car experienced a "money shift" at the hands of another driver. And oddly enough, I got her back about 2 weeks ago.

Lots of similarities, and the article nailed my impressions of driving my car again.

What a wonderful piece. (and I'm not referring to Shania). I think it pulls at all of us "summer only" drivers who, because of a particularly harsh winter, have had precious little drive time the past several months, behind the wheel of our Porsches. I think I'll go out to the garage, pull the CarCapsule off and say hello.

Yeah that just about captures how I feel. She is in the garage waiting for the Michigan winter to break. Only good news is that - fingers crossed -this will be our last winter in Michigan as Texas beckons again and that should mean 365 days (give or take 2-3) in which I can satisfy my Porsche cravings......
