Audio Upgrades
Hi
Has anyone performed any audio upgrades on their 964? I changed the original radio to a Nakamichi one CD and also removed the original Speakers front and rear for a same size JBL, the sound has improved but it is still too poor, no bass at all, etc...
Has anyone performed any modifications without compromissing much the space of the car?
Whay would be the best setup? someone told me that the best is to enlarge the original place for the front speakers.
Thanks

Alex,
My audio upgrade consists of the Cup pipe and the MSDS airintake!
Actually MB Quart 6 1/4 speakers with separate tweeters in the front doors and Coustic speakers in the rear shelf. Under the passanger seat is a RockfordFosgate amplifier. The MB Quart sound extreamly good!

I just replaced the stock 5 1/4's with a set of 5 1/4 MB Quarts that I had around and stuffed the stock plastic semi encloser with some fill. Every thing else is stock and I would say that low end is pretty good. Nobody would mistake it for having a true sub but compared to many stock systems it does sound pretty good.
How much power is your deck putting out? Rember that on decks RMS power is usually about 50% of what they advertise, peak power.

The model I have is the Nakamichi CD-45z in Dash cd, from what they told me when I bought it it should have 19W RMS.
The speakers I put on the system are the GTO series from JBL, which they told me they were OK, but nothing realy special.

I had a new radio installed this monday. I chose a Blaupunkt Orlando CD72. I didn't upgrade speakers or amplifier, I just replaced my old factory Blaupunkt Coburg RCM85. Great sound, and a bulletproof CD reader. What's more, it's CD-RW compatible.
I bought an internally amplified "plug-n-play" Bazooka brand sub woofer tube 8". Carpeted it to match and mounted it on passenger side 2+2 seat back. It's very inconspicuous and sounds, well, EVIL !!! I also installed the coolest looking head unit, Sony's cdx-630, slid right in. the face is smooth black and , did I say it looks cool? Oh, and it has internal active crossovers to cut out highs to the woofer or lows to your side speakers. Topped it all off with Boston acoustics in the door panels powered by an alpine amp. I am going deaf.
Upgraded my whole system through Rod Birch at www.caraudioinnovations.com. I have a Nakamichi 6CD in-dash changer, an MTX Thunder amplifier under the passenter seat, Focal speakers front and back, and a single Image Dynamics subwoofer in the special enclosure that Rod makes (carpeted over with factory original carpeting). The system very understated in appearance (no neon colors, etc.). The Nakamichi head unit looks right at home in the dash. And the sound has to be heard to be appreciated - it is a beautiful reproduction of the music - especially for a car. The downside is that the total cost approaches $2,000.

Well, now that you brought it up
Ive pretty much finished updating my audio system. The head is a McIntosh MX406 (for all of you McIntosh lovers this is a great unit!).

The updated speakers in the door are Focal Polykevlar component speakers with separate tweeter and cross-overs I have installed new Focal Polykevlar in the rears, as well.

For extra base response, a pair of 8 Image Dynamics installed within Audio Innovations Subwoofer panels (carpet is a perfect match).

Powering it all is a MTX Thunder 5 channel amplifier, which has been placed under the bonnet (strapped to the fuel cell, the carpet hides the amp very well without much of a bump).

Overall, its a great system if you go for this kind of stuff. The retro look of the McIntosh head fits the look and feel of my Speedster . The initial upgrade started at Audio Innovations in Sacramento, CA (speakers, subwoofers and amp) and was finished by Rolling Thunder in San Rafael, CA (McIntosh head, rewiring and relocating the amp from under the seat to the bonnet).

Nahhh... I just removed the fuel cell altogether...
Oh... You mean I'm supposed to DRIVE IT?????
Actually, the amp board (3/4" MDF with a 4" center hole for the amp wiring harness) is mounted to the fuel cell tie-down strap. The brackets mounting the amp board to the cell strap were fabricated by Rolling Thunder.
The original placement of the amp under the passenger seat caused the leads from the amp to protrude slightly beyond the bottom of the seat. This was further complicated by a slight motor noise interference - either by weak grounding and/or bad wire placement through the passenger foot-well.
When I purchased the new head, I really didn't want the added expense of the amp relocation - but there were some other aftermarket electronic goodies (a built-in "invisible" K40 radar detector system, a badly wired Pioneer alarm system and remote door locks) placed in the car before I bought it, that had caused a rather severe rat's nest of horror's which necessitated the rewiring... It seems, when I try to upgrade or fix a "problem" on this car, it just sort of mushrooms into a little epic of it's own...
I hope to never tinker with the suspension... But, then again...
When it comes to Porsche, is never easy or cheap - but it is fun.... Right?!

I have checked Rodīs web page at Audio innovations the systems look great, the problem is that I live in Spain and the work will be done here, for the amplifier I like the trunk idea from Brad, it doesnīt seem to compromise much space and you donīt have to move the amplifier around like other instalations Iīve seen when you have to take out the spare wheel (not that I,ve done it, but you never know). Also he mentions that when he had the amplifier under the seat there was a slight engine interfere.
The amplifier I will use is a Alpine V12 the exact model I donīt remember but is in an older car but the size is like a laptop.
I am planning to Change to an Alpine COmponent speakers for the front the SPR-176A. 50W RMS.
For the back they have suggested me to keep the ones I have right now JBL GTO series in original place, or even to disconnect them.
For the Bass there are several options, to place a subwoofer like Robīs on one side or to use for example an amplified subwoofer from clarion under the passangers seat.
Thanks
ALEX

I also have the Nakamichi unit like yours - love the minimal looks and no flashing lights - I also have MB Quarts in the front and some Polk audio units in the back all in the stock sizes and holes. Sounds pretty good to me - plenty of bass etc
