Seeking Cheaper Insurance (USA)
I gotta find cheaper insurance for my '91 C4 coupe.
With a $250 deductible on comprehensive and $500 on collision, I'm still getting stuck by GEICO for $1,206.80 per year. Ouch.
I have two drivers and three vehicles (including the 964) to insure, and I think I could get a better deal if I went with a company that can write my cars AND my homeowner's...any thoughts there?
Anybody have experience with one of those "limited use" or "speciality car" policies? I've hear you can get one that is a LOT cheaper if you don't drive to work, and keep the miles under a certain number per year. Thoughts? Leads?
Help me <sniff>

Hi Robert,
Leland West (advertises in Excellence) is the company that sells cheap Porsche policies if you agree to keep the mileage below 5k miles per year. WWW.Lelandwest.com . No personal experience with the company, just relaying what I've read.
When I moved back to California in 1990, and had to switch insurance companies, several brokers were frank and recommended AAA to me for a good rate on an "exotic" sportscar--if you have a clean record. Turns out, AAA did have the best rate by far. You might give them a try. Oh, and they do sell homeowner's policies, as well.
Good luck!

High,
Don't waste ur time w/ Leland West, their add is misleading. I had applied through them and
agreed on a value, got all my neccessary documents that they required together, sent it to them, only to recieve a phone call from the prez.'s secretary(the guy didnt even have the ***** to call me himself) that he felt my car wasnt worth the agreed value(in fact he didnt even want to insure my car). When I asked his secretary to speak to him personally, he was rude and hostile and told me he wasnt gonna insure my vehicle because it was only a carrera 2 and not worth anything! Instead of going nuts on him I just hung the phone up and stayed where I am currently.
It's my opinion that all he does is insure the 356 guys who barely drive their cars and rolls the dice hoping they wont have a wreck in the two weekends a year the car is out.
Don't waste ur time like I did.

I own 4 vehicles. I looked around and got the best deal through the internet with a large firm AIG. You can get an on-line quote. They were pleasant and prompt.

Robert:
It's unclear to me whether you mean you're paying the $1200/year for the 964 OR all the cars you have.
I have State Farm and have my car on a limited mileage policy (about $800/year for the C4) good for 7500 miles/year. I get a multi-car discount, but I've had tickets...which I'm sure hasn't helped my rates. About the only restriction is that the car can't be used as a "commuter" car, but you can drive it to work periodically (the wording isn't very clear in that section...I guess they're trying to imply you shouldn't be using the car as a daily commuter). My deductible is $100 for everything.
Hope this helps,
Bill Wagner

The $1200 is for just the Porsche. I get a small discount for it being part of a three-car policy, but a "surcharge" for being a "high performance automobile."
I did an online quote with Progressive, and the total price dropped by $405! Yeah, baby. I think I'll contact a company like Nationwide or Allstate and try and get them to cover my cars and homeowner's for even a lower cost.
I'll post the details here when done.

I am with Progressive and did some research on their prices before settling on them. My policy per year is somewhere in the $600 a year range for less than 8K miles per year(Pleasure Use). This rate is based on having other vehicles insured with them (multi-car discount). If you were to take all your vehicles to them I'd bet you will get a better rate than the one you are paying now. Can't speak for their claims dept. Never had an accident while with them. <<Knocking on Wood>>

I'm married and insure 3 cars with Encompass insurance (formally CNA) and pay about $700 per year with $500 deductable for my 89 930. I have no restrictions although it is listed as a pleasure use car and I have no tickets. They even insure the car during a Driver's Education training session. Go figure.

Hello,
To drive a Porsche in the Netherlands is expensive to.
I pay for my 1992 C2 on a 12000 km base, a price from $ 1440 a year.
This is on a 75 % discount, because I drive accident free the last 15 Years.
Normaly would the insurance price be $5760 per year on a non discount base.
What do you talk about............

Hey Robert,
Sure wished I lived about 75 miles south of here, because then I'd live in Vermont or New York, and get reasonable insurance (and tax) rates like you lucky Americans!
Here (Montreal), nothing is anybody's fault, and nobody is to blame for anything. If you get hit but some lunatic/drunk/idiot, you get your expenses and lost income paid. That's it. Can't even sue. We get zip for pain and suffering.
Oh well, at least we still get to vote occasionally...
Oh yeah, I pay CDN $1,200 (about USD $750) per year for my 964, with deductibles at $1,000 for Collision and $500 for Comprehensive. This is for pleasure-use-only coverage (ie. no commuting), with an estimated annual mileage of less than 5,000. No combined coverage discounts. Unsure if this will cover Driver's Ed Weekends... By the way, no at-fault accidents and no tickets on my driving record. How long I'll remain ticket-free is anybody's guess, however!!
Only seven weeks of winter left! Can't wait to get my baby back out of storage!

Leland West is a joke. They require among other things the your car is NOT your primary vehicle. Owning your own home, 5000 miles max a year are more. I have Geico with a clean record I pay $1400 a year. I think it's because I live in So. California and have a cab. Nevermind that I havn't had a claim or ticket in over 12 years. Allstate quoted me at $1800 for 6 months!! I found out they are pullong out of the area and don't want to write any new business.

Just to give a British twist to it:
I am 31 years old, have no insurance discount at all (my ex-wife insured the last car and I lost my discount - doh!) - and I pay £1200 per year currently. I hope that this will decrease for next year but didn't think it was too bad as I have no mileage restrictions and it includes 72 hour European cover unlimited times per year.
My excess (or I guess its deductible in the US) though is pretty high at £750 - but then I wouldn't make a claim unless it was SERIOUS anyway...
