Is it OK to pull out thru bolt to replace seal?
Hi all,
I am down to the short block on my rebuild. I am not splitting the case.
I need to replace the thru bolt seal. Is it okay to complete remove the through bolt to replace the seals one from both ends?
I plan on pulling out one through bolt one at a time, replace seal, then retighten. Then move onto the next through bolt.
Is this okay?
thanks,
anthony

I would suggest that you make sure that everything is clean inside the passage.. Any spec of dirt will keep the oring from swelling and sealing... If you are taking it down to the case and you are pulling out the studs, why don't you spend the extra 20 minutes and split the case and replace the bearings, this also includes the intermediate shaft bearings... You are that close, go all the way and clean everything up..

I am only doing a top end on this car, valve guides. Car has 90K so I assuming the bottom end is okay since the compresion and leakdown numbers are good.
Besides, I am afraid of splitting the case and causing problems /w leaks. My skills are not quite there yet.
My main concern here is that as I remove the through bolt out of the engine, is the bolt holding up anything inside the case that my "drop".
thanks,
anthony

Leak down tests will tell you whether the bearings are good or bad too right? Won't a compression test tell you that the transmission needs rebuilding too? I once used an ignition spark tester to check my tire pressure.
