Roof racks
Hi
Has anyone any experience of using roof bars (Porsche or otherwise) for carrying windsurfers on a 964.
I figure it's got to look cooler than a Beetle at the beach!

Excellent, a windsurfing thread!
Can't help you with the roof bars, we take a camper and a trailer to the beach.
Almost went to Hayling on Sunday. Force 5, SW, low tide midday. But just as we were about start loading up, the rain came down. Wimped out.
So, we are going to have to meet up. Anyone else in the UK into speed and thrills on the water?

Hey Phil, to answer your question...I've been using a Yakima roof rack on both of my 911s for about six years now...VERY versatile systems.
You will need to purchase the Yakima 1A Raingutter towers (set of 4, approx. $85-$95), a pair of bars, (cut to length, approx. $45 pair) and whatever attachments you need, I use them for my bikes, so I have a pair of 9MM skewers and mini-trays...you, of course, are looking for the surfboard/windsurfing attachment!
Once again, and as always, if you would like a pic, just email me...I have a few I can send.
You may want to consult with your local Yakima dealer in regards to bar spacing and whether or not your 911 should donn a roof rack that carries a windsurfing rig...I don't know much about them (windsurfing rigs) except that I would imagine they're pretty darned BIG!

Just read your article in 911&PW, welcome to the fold!!
Looks as if you bought an excellent example, I think the RUF 17" wheels look great, really suit the car.
As the 911 has a conventional gutter I would just try a good quality generic fitting bar such as Thule, Halfords stock them and I am sure if you took the car with you they would let you try some for size.(take a large sheet to protect the roof when you try them for size)

Thanks George, glad you like the wheels, I do too. Should look even better when I get the car lowered.
I'll be near a Halfords later today so will pop in to look at the Thule bars (I know how to have fun!).
Going back to windsurfers, any thoughts on how long a board can safely be carried. I had a 295 in mind, but wonder if that will be long. If it is, I'll have to get in some practice on short boards!

I've also used a Yakima rack on my 911SC to haul tires to the Glen. I've used Yakima racks for many years, and would recommend them. They have a web site at <a href="http://www.yakima.com" target="_blank">www.yakima.com</a> showing the available attachements for various activities.

A 295 seems a bit long to me since the bar spacing will be relatively close. However, have you seen the latest breed of short "wide style" boards? I reckon you can get a great choice of boards some 265-275 long with 100 up to 160!! liters and width of 65 to 80 cm. (Heck Naish boards have the Titan at 110 liters and 258 cm, serious short board fun with a 6.5 sail! ) The choice is amazing as the brand line ups include more models than ever. Boards magazine in the UK is a good source of objective information, e.g. the sept/oct 2001 preview of the 2002 market.

Mountain bikes eh? I race 'em both, Mountain and Road...I like to get that Lance Armstrong feeling every once in awhile...although I must say Mountain Biking is much more gratifying.
As for Thule, good stuff...I just don't like the square bars...the rounds ones on Yakima racks allow for an infinite number of angles/adjustments.
Also, as far as bar spacing, the 911 is one of the few cars where you can get quite a bit of bar spacing...being the the roof slopes downward gradually and the rain gutters run all the way down to the edge of the back window...nice feature if you have roof racks in mind!!

Rubbish! For me the whole point (well almost!) of buying a 964 was to be able to overtake safely on 'A'& 'B' roads!!
