Well, it was my wife's idea to get the Porsche (my 40th birthday present - this or a Caterham) , though she hasn't driven it on her own yet!

Downside - maintenance/improvements cost me double! For every pound I spend on the 964, she gets the same to spend on herself (but new dishwasher and washing machine don't count????!!!)

All in all, I'm happy

My wife has really warmed up to the Porsche in the last few months. It all began when I bought her her own helmet and registered her in a local PCA autocross. By the end of the day, (and with plenty of encouragement) something changed! I think she really started to understand my fascination with the car and began to enjoy the power!

Today she really enjoys the competition in the ladies division and was HAPPY to have me buy a set of track wheels and new tires! Why didn't I get her involved sooner?!?!

By becoming active in the PCA, she's made new friends who understand Porsche addiction. ...now we're planning on getting a rollbar and harnesses. A little more creative budget juggling and we'll be there! Making your spouse/girlfriend a PART of your hobby is a lot more fun and good for your relationship!

Wow, most of you guys are so lucky!

My Porsche has been at the center of many of my girlfriend and I's conflicts. I can truly say that she doesn't like the car, and doesn't understand my passion for it at all.

First of all, she hates riding in it. It scares her to death. In addition, she thinks that it makes me drive like a madman. While I admit that I drive faster in the Porsche, she doesn't understand that I am SO far within the limits of the car, that there is no reason to fear. Even simple acceleration scares her:
An 8 second jaunt to 60 results in raised eyebrows.
A 7 second jog to 60 results in an evil look.
A 6 second burst to 60 illicits screams of anger.
And any attempt to go for low 5 second runs to 60 means I am in the dog house for days. Seriously.

But that is just the beginning. She is baffled by the amount of time that I spend working on the car. This is a labor of love for me, and I think that this is why it is so upsetting to her. I truly believe that she thinks I love my car more than her. Any amount of time I spend working on my car could be spent with her - why would I chose to be spending time with the car if I loved her as much?

And finally, she is utterly bewildered by the amount of money I've spent on my Porsche. Personally, I feel like the 964 has been one of the least expensive cars I've ever owned. It's been VERY reliable so far. Almost all of the money I've spent has been on maintenance, track prep, and upgrades. But she thinks that cars should be expense-free so there is minimal understanding here too.

What does one do? I love her dearly, but this is definitely an area of incompatibility. Can the three of us co-exist? Please advise!

well, I brought the car home after buying it and she wanted to drive it...so herself and her mother (who just happenned to be there!!) took the car for a spin and managed to get caught by a speed camera.
...sort of killed her right to complain about my driving.

Finally came and drove her first slalom this weekend (I've only had this car for 3 years)and the competitive edge appeared immediately. Now she want to do the rest of the season !!! She even suggested I get a more powerful one. i'm not complaining !!!!!!!

The Kids love the car too. Life is cool.

Agreed Phil, I set up a 'car account' when we (note the 'we' I'm constantly getting corrected on that) bought the 964 which is used for servicing and the like. All toys and mods go on the business card :-)

My other half was extremely sceptical when I suggested the idea of ditching the Beemer for a porsche. She finally came round on the basis that I agreed to letting her use it on her days off work (in the full knowledge that she would hate it so I was safe).

She was still sceptical when I got it, we took it out for a blast (her driving) and within ten seconds a HUUUUUGE grin appears on her face and that was it - hooked. Now I have to sacrifice my Porkie two days a week to uphold my side of the bargain - and I'm gutted everytime.

I must admit, there is a certain smugness when she is driving and boy racers try and have a go 'against the bird in the porsche', she promptly red lines it off into the distance....

What more can a chap ask for than a cute chick that likes porsches.....

My lady loves 'em

They were 'there' before she was (a bit like me going to football every other Saturday in winter and Drag Racing in the summer) . . . they came as part of the package and she accepts that.

Having said that she loves driving them too

Acceptance is how I would best describe it, however, any "work" (detailing, minor mechanical etc..) must be spaced out in time to avoid trouble - max 2 hours per week - so it will take me years to get all my little projects completed. She insists that for longer trips, our BMW´s are more comfortable, however, when I "floor it" through a roundabout, leaving all other traffic behind, I can see the grin on her face, when she asks how I resist driving it like that ALL THE TIME.

Acceptance here as well. Although I did have 2 Porsches in my garage for a few months but that was really pushing it.

Instead of persuasion/justification/lying(?) re. new car purchase (you should have heard me pre-recent 993RS purchase....I cringe now thinking about it!) I should 'trade' the wife!

Actually she's pretty reasonable but does apply the 'matching £' formula. The real cost of 993 includes garden redesign and weekend in Venice!!

My only complaint is that she can't drive stick yet, but she's trying to learn on some friends car's before I let her loose with the baby.
She loves it. She loves how many people gawk, when people go "is that the turbo?" haha-doesn't even have a wing!

She loves when I go fast, "it's fun and it sounds awesome"

We'll get married...

It is all in how you break her in. I told my now fiance on our first date... "There is another woman in my life and she is the queen of my garage." She loves to ride in my C2 and currently has no issues with my spending money on it. The only time she complained was after I spent 12 hours detailing it one weekend. She is a pretty good sport about my "habits" and will let me drag her around Daytona for 10 hours, Sebring for 8 hours, and any other DE, club race, or car event I can get to. The ultimate test was when I got her a helmet for her birthday.

My now ex-girlfriend had no problem with my P-car obsession. When she drove my Carrera, she said she could reallly get used to it and loved the power. Moreover, when we had a major turning point in our relationship that put into question my keeping the 993, she said there was no way I could sell the car.

Unfortunately, her positive attitude for my love of Porsches and things fast was not enough to keep us together.
