Remove upper panel by removing screw from inner small panel and two screws underneath then pop out screw cover on other end (using fingernails) and remove screw underneath.

Pop manual lock cover off with utility knife, unscrew retaining screw underneath, and unscrew retaining piece (if very tight, use opened tips of needlenose pliers to loosen).

Unhook door latch mechanism by pulling on latch and lifting small bar behind to unsnap out of small, white plastic cup. Unscrew the two bolts behind latch in door handle using 5 mm allen key.

Remove 7 screws around perimeter of lower edge of door to remove door bin. Don't forget screws inside door box that go into door latch region and under the lid at outer edge into door.

Unpop door panel by pulling gently on door. There are 3 pop-in nubbins - 2 towards the car and 1 on the outer edge. Unplug power window plug and speaker plugs. Be careful as door still has speaker in it -- it is very heavy and door panel will bend or even break easily.
Pop-in rivets circled in red, plugs to undo circled in green.

I just pulled mine apart today and I had ordered Infinity 6 1/2's based on what I had read on here. I can say they don't fit on a '89. Tomorrow I will look for some 5 1/4's that will fit under the factory grills.

Max, I put 6.5" speakers in my doors. Oddly enough the bolt holes lined up, but the plastic "basket" in the door that is behind the speaker managed to rub in a few spots. I was able to "adjust" the basket with a dremel and make it fit just dandy. The speakers I used were Polk Audio.
