1992 air cooling blow out
I just picked up this 1992 C2 cobalt blue with 88k miles about two weeks ago. Its in beautiful condition..just a few stone chips up front..otherwise very clean has had new flywheel and distributor belt and clutch replaced at about 50k miles so I should be in good shape. My second Porsche..I had a 73 911T in the early 80's.
I was out on a drive a couple of days ago and suddenly there was a very loud bang from the rear end. So I pulled over and checked the engine compartment to find a large hole and a chunk of rubber on the engine. The hole and the associated rubber was in the rubber boot that connects the top of the fan with the air cooling distribution ducts..allowing air to be forced around the engine.
a local mechanic suggests this is common. Is this true? What is this boot called so I can get a new one.

I had this happen just after I got my car as well. The p/n for it is 964-106-403-02. It is called an engine air duct. I got it at the local Porsche dealers for $31.15.
If you are mecanically inclined you can replace this in less than a half hour.
Hope this helps.
