Post Glovebox Latch--Anyone Know the Trick for Adjusting?

Hey guys,

The glovebox latch is the same design it was on my old '84 Carrera (possibly my old '66). In both cases, the nut holding the release periodically works itself out, making the glovebox difficult to close.

If you tighten the nut up too snug, you can't get the box open! If you set it too loose, it won't close.

It doesn't come out of adjustment but once or twice a year, but it's annoying. Been this way as long as I've owned the car.

Anyone else have this problem? Know a trick to set it permanently? Put removable grade loctite on the threads, then adjust the nut quickly before the loctite sets? Shim the nut so you can snug it up tight, and still get the box open? A very thin lockwasher?

Here's a pic of what I'm describing:

Thanks!

Blue Loctite sounds reasonable.

Hi Randall,
Please let us know the "fix" once you've got it sorted as mines the same (hopefully with a pic..).

Cheers

Cool

Randall,

Use some white plumbers tape. The one they use for waterlines and home radiators.

Loctite is also a good option.

But why do you use your glove compartment?
May be your gun is to heavy??

Here's another good question:

One of the first things I did was install an aftermarket stereo with CD player, RCA outputs for an amplifier, etc. and installation was facilitated by removal of the glove box insert itself.

Okay, this was almost 2 years ago, but I remember having a BI___ of a time removing the insert and pretty much screwed up the courtesy light.

Everything works now, but I am contemplating removing it to do some more "custom" work in behind the dash while my car is down for another few weeks...any tips on removing the glove box lid AND insert without aggravation?

I know...sometimes it's the simple things that get us!

Randall,

Tighten the lock nut as snug as you can so it will not come loose. There is a adjustment screw on the strike located on the dash. Turning the adjustment screw will move the catch on the strike. You should be able to fine tune the catch to lock your glove box.

Good luck,
