Theft-Recovered 911's
Anyone have a thought on the perception of theft-recovered 911's? I have a chance to purchase a 91 C2 for about 15K. It is in average to poor shape, clutch is out and mainly filthy. Do these cars that are stolen and recovered carry any stigma with them? The title is a "replacement tag". Are these cars too much to fool with, and would I have trouble selling it in the future? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I'd be worried about how hard that car had been driven before it had been warmed up. Presumably whoever stole it wouldn't know about waiting for the oil to warm up and would have been red-lining it right from the get-go.
Just my 2 cents.

IMO, a theft recovered 911 could be a good deal IF
1) You've owned 911's in the past and are very familiar with them. Preferably you've owned this particular model before.
2) You intend to keep this car for a long time; and
3) The car is in good mechanical condition.
A theft recovered 911 could make a great track car, since you really just want good mechanicals.
Yes, you will have trouble selling this car in the future. The C2 is a great car (it's what I drive) but are you prepared to spend $150 - $200 per month just for regular maintenance? Also, the clutch job will run at least $2000 because you should change out the flywheel also. I'm assuming this car doesn't have records? Then you should have a complete service done, including valve adjustment, and change out the brake fluid and transmission fluid. That's another $1000.
A theft recovery is only good under very narrow circumstances. Based on what you've said (and what you haven't said), this doesn't sound like a good car for you. If you really want a 911 and your budget is $15K, buy a 911 SC, which is a great, dependable 911 that won't depreciate.
