Default Converting to Centerlocking Hubs

On my new Racecar I'm going to convert from 5 lug wheels to centerlocks. I have already purchased a set of BBS magnesium wheels which are compatible with the Porsche centerlock system. All of the centerlock parts are PMNA race parts. The hub, ABS ring, and bolt are different between the street part and race part. It is interesting to note that the Carrera RS has the same hub, ABS ring, and integrated bolt as the race part.

I'm going to machine my hubs to accept the drive dogs and locking ring so I don't have to buy the racing part and I'm going to just run the street ABS ring and bolt. The torque values are the same so the pressure on the bearing should be the same.

It looks like the center-lock is a much heavier part, no?

Thanks for the cool post with the pictures.

The RS also uses an aluminum front hub, interesting the race part is steel.

Also the Euro RS (5 lug) and RSR 3.8 (Centerlock) use the same rear half shaft with a slightly longer thread that normal 5 lug application uses.

Are there any problems using the normal shorter thread half shaft?

I'm not an expert on all of the parts differences, but I'm certain that all of the wheel hubs from 964 through 993 are steel. The 964 uses a steel upright where the 993 uses an aluminum upright and the racing cars have uprights with different geometry. I am running the later GT2 Evo aluminum style uprights.

I have a set of PMNA lightweight axles that will work for the centerlock system. Comparing them to a pair of stock axles, they are the same length so I'm not sure if there is a difference.

Geoffrey, this may sound a little stupid, but considering that I'm no racer. What are the benefits of that type of wheel attachment set-up. Is it so you can change wheels quicker, or is there more to it?

It is faster to change wheels (which is irrevelant for what I'm doing), but also they don't cross thread as easily as 5 lug studs. If you watched the Grand Am Daytona 24 hours you saw several teams struggling with cross threaded studs early in the race. There may be other benefits as well -- Glen?

I'm trying to approximate a factory RSR which would come with them, and I'm having a good time scavaging for older racing parts and/or modifying stock parts to work.
