Default Power steering removal

Hi all,
I his book Adrian mentions the "option" of removal of the power steering package. So, my question is HOW?

Can I get a "manual" rack and pinion to replace the power unit?

Do I then just leave all the plumbling in place, top off the resevoir, and cap the end of the lines?

Take off the power steering pump belt so the pump is disingaged?

All this because I have a leak in the power rack and pinion. Thought the improved feeling of the road might be worth it.

Opinion?

Thanks,
John

John,
When I did the supercharged motor I had to lose the PS. I removed the pump & lines in the engine compartment, cut the lines up front & installed an RSA steering rack. Works great & I personally like the feel much better on these cars w/o the PS.

John,

As JW mentioned, it's pretty straight forward. After removing the power steering pump, you want to cap off the cam opening. Patrick Motorsport in Phoenix has an aluminum cap for that purpose. If you install the RS manual rack, consider installing the 993 support bracket (pictures have been posted before). Not expensive and easy to install.

Bill,
Is the 993 bracket for additional support & would it be a worthwhile upgrade for my track-driven RSA?

Jay,

The 993 bracket connects the two towers that hold the steering rack to the body. If you do a search, pictures have been posted by Cupcar. And yes, it's supposed to stiffen things up - there was a Porsche 993 bulletin on it. Complete parts include the bracket (maybe $30) and two slightly longer bolts.

Bill,
That sounds reasonable enough. More stiffness is always a good thing

I found your post from back in April '03 that gives these part numbers as well as the fork upgrade. Thanks once again for making my car even better & if we ever meet, I definitely owe you several beers

Gotta say it again, Rennlist is the best thing since sliced bread!
