Dear Gary,
Once they are gone it is hard to bring them back to life. It has to be removed anyway. You could try cleaning and flushing and then do a test outside of the 964 by pouring boiling liquids into the "in" end and see if it comes out the "out" end.
The people I have worked with on this problem normally take the advice that it is not worth trying to repair and get a new one or functioning second hand one. We have messed around a lot and they fail again quickly. Finding replacement internal parts is not easy either. You need to be a bit of a scrounger or super DIY for this work. However it can be done with time and patience.
