Question Anyone installed a manual cooling fan over-ride switch?

Managed to pull up a little on this from search, but still have questions.

Engine temp. not normally an issue here in Scotland (well, pre global warming anyway) - but especially for this summer's trip to Europe and the 'ring, it would be nice to have some control over when the fan switches in.

I want to make any mod non-permanent/reversible btw.

So, if you have done this, where did you wire in the switch at the fan? How was the wiring brought into the cabin? I saw a suggestion to use the fog light circuit, as a nearby 12v source and ready made switch..sounds pretty nifty. I also thought about a semi-permanent switchable jumper at the relay..nice and simple/non invasive..

Any thoughts?

There is a sensor at the top of the fan, accessible through the right wheel well after removing the forward plastic covering. If that's disconnected, the fan goes into high spinning mode. One friend merely spliced into those wires and ran them to the dash and used a fog lamp switch for the circuit.

Would brake cooling vents where the fogs sit (but without ducts to brakes) also not carry more air to the oil cooler?

I think JohnFM did this to his C2. Maybe ping him a PM for advice.

Does the write up on Pcar also work on 964's? I think thats where I read it but seem to remember it was on a 993.

I've done it to both my 993 and 964 (had to on the 964 as I don't have a CCU anymore and needed to have the fan operate). I really don't think it's needed unless you are doing really hot days at the track or your resitor dies.

The write-up on p-car.com will work fine. I used a fog light switch in the extra spot on the dask in the 993 (the console space was already used for a Garage door opener). On the 964 it's just a basic switch cut into a blank that goes where the radio was.

If you need help, I can supply all the wiring stuff that Randall provide to me...

Yes, and to the a/c as well.

I knew it would - it was meant as a suggestion to do that rather than install the switch.

Thanks!
I guess the question as to whether it is truly needed, how hot is too hot, etc., is one that could run and run.
In hot traffic/on track/climbing mountain passes in summer sees the needle sit between 9 and 10, never more. The temp sits at 8 o'clock at all other times, and I would rather that was the case when the engine is under more stress too.. It probably makes no difference other than a psychological one to the driver, of course..
Could be a good excuse to get some cooling ducts, too :-).

I'll try P car, and then either yourself Tom, or JohnFM.
Here's to the summer!

I have a manual over-ride switch which I use at the track. I assume it works as I do not have over heating problems.

One of these days, when it moves up the priority list, I'll install an override switch for the fan. Until then, if it's running warmer than I want, I just undo the plastic, reach in, and disconnect the sensor. Doesn't happen often, though.
