Anyone ever break a rear axle on a RS ?
I was thinking about what kind of spares it might be a good idea to have on hand for the upcoming racing season. I have heard that the rear axle assembly on the 964's has been known to occasionally fail. Anyone have any info on these ? Are the RS parts the same as the C2 / C4 ?

I've heard of the rear stub axel breaking as well but I'm not sure it needs to be carried as a spare. Perhaps it's more of an issue if you intend to run slicks.
I'm fairly sure the Euro RS rear axel is the same as the turbo and is different to the C2/4 as I ntend to swap mine when a used example crops up - last time I looked at Porsche price it weren't cheap.

The rear axle assembly on a Euro Carrera RS is the same as the 964 RSR (964.332.024.70) while the turbo is 965.332.037.10 and 965.332.037.12 and the standard Carrera 2 is a 964.332.024.13 and 964.332.024.08. All of the axle assemblies use the same CV joint which is 911.332.030.01, however, the 3.6 Turbo uses 928.332.030.08.
Hope this helps.

...and I'm just doing DE's in my 964. Its almost certain that if you don't have a space half shaft, one will break. Appease the car gods and keep a spare!

C2 = 964.332.024.08
C2 M249 = 964.332.024.12 (Tip tranny)
Turbo = 964.332.037.12 (inclds. -92,3.6 & Turbo looks all)
RS = 964.332.024.70
Our cars use the RS version of this
Incidently our cars us 2 locking nut's to secure the rear axle (147 ft/in) and should be replaced when you replace the axles
- mine spun off and was a contributing factor to my off.

jc964rs,
The USA Carrera cups are essentially the Euro RS with a few minor differences to make them US legal ( airbags, power windows, standard glass) They are the only US legal RS that was ever factory imported. Check out Rob's great website for more info.
Rob,
Thanks, so are you saying that 964 332 024 08 does not have the locking nuts ? vs 70 which has them. I did some calling around yesterday and the concensus was that 08 would work, but then again there were no gaurantees and not many people have any experience with the RS parts to even know what you are asking.

All 964, 993 and GT3 Cup axles are interchangeable and the 2 locking nuts can be used on any of them. Bill just snag a used 993 halfshaft from a dismantler or PM me and I can send You one. They all will work I assure You....guess how I know....lol

the C2 part should work - however it uses a single lock nut and a cotter pin (fuzzy memory on that one) -I would use the RS part (i have 2 new ones for my rebuild at the shop actually, 500.00 something i believe, i really don't want to look at the bills just yet).

I think the main failures in racing are the CV joints not the axels.
Anyone use Krytox lube in their CV's this is supposed to be the solution at Le Mans.

Yessir, in fact I have had a 993 TT, 993 RS, 996 SuperCup and stock 993 all lined up next to each other before and could not discern any differences at all. Measured axle dia etc and they were all the same. The race bits are supposed to have superior CV joints btw but the stock 993 axle served us well for a race weekend on another GT3 Cup and he now carries it as his spare. Just checked under my 964 C4 and it appears identical to the other 3 I have....
The only difference is that the SuperCup axle has 6 bolt connector versus 3 on the stock 993 so we just added those 3 extra connectors from his nuked halfshaft at the track and away he went. The bolt connectors(not sure that is the best term to describe them) spread the load around all 6 allens on the trans side CV.

Great, interesting you mentioned the C4 axle, because I found a pair of new OEM's for only $200 a piece. I think I may pick one up to have around in a pinch. I should probably also pick up a spare wheel bearing or two. Probably not the easiest part to change at the track, but doable.
