Default Engine Mount diagnosis

I think it's probably very difficult to tell from this picture and this angle, but can any of you help me decide whether or not these mounts are toast? It says in Adrian's book that you should be able to hear the hydraulic fluid sloshing around when you shake them if they're bad, and the next time I head in there I'll be sure to do that test. Also, if they (the body shop) are planning to replace the mounts, I'm going with the RS mounts, so if anybody's got the part number handy, I'd really appreciate it.

An easier way to figure out if your motor mounts are shot might be to jack the car up with the jack under the engine. If the body moves in sync with the motor & jack then your mounts are okay. Looking at a photo taken at an non-parallel perspective is really subjective. The RS motor mount parts list can be found HERE

Those don't look too bad..if they were completely shot you'd see more of the post exposed. I just recently ordered my RS mounts as the factory setup is a bit pricey.

Brian,

In comparison to the ones I removed from my car yours look good, mine were about 3/4" longer than standard as per Adrian's book and the fluid slosh was quite audible. Do they push/pull both ways? Mine were bottomed out so I could only push the mount back into the body and not pull it out.

I would post a picture for you but I binned them last night.

FWIW, I just had my motor mounts replaced, they looked waaay worse than yours, mechanic diagnosed them as ruined with a 10 second inspection while they were still in the car. I saw 'em after they came out, the space between the body of the mount and the ?flange was excessive and they were leaking a bit.

The RS mounts are my winter project - I'll order next month so I can get the free 2005 Porsche parts calendar. (Actually, since we've had snow already, fitting the 993 MC could count as a winter project too!).

What is the difference between RS mounts and the oem? Is it worth to change them?

The OEM are hydraulic and the RS ones are solid rubber. Change if broken IMHO.

Brian I discussed the RS mounts with a fellow club member who has also a C4. He told me that they are not very good for the C4 due to the fact that the car is heavier than the RS. He tested the RS mounts and in his opinion it got worse so he went back to the originals for the C4.
Cheers

I think you all are right, and the mounts are probably still good. For once I was actually hoping that a part had gone bad since I wasn't going to be the one paying to replace it (let the insurance company worry about that).

Burgass,

The engine mounts hold the engine, not the car...right, so what has the weight of the car got to do with it? What got worse?
