Default HELP!!! LWF Clutch problem

Hi All,
Is it just me or has anyone else had this problem.

Approx 1 year ago I had my 90 C2 coverted from a DMF to a LWF. Here are the parts I used:

1 964.102.239.31 Flywheel
2 964.116.011.61 Clutch Disc / RS
3 Sachs Motorsports Racing Pressure Plate Sachs Part # 88-3082-750 (similar part #'s 88-3082-726 and 88-3082-752)
4 944.116.080.00 Release Bearing
5 950.116.813.30 Clutch Guide Tube
6 964.114.143.31 Starting Ring Gear
7 928.102.151.01 Bolts
8 N.014.715.3 Socket Screw 8 x 45
9 931.102.111.00 Pilot Bearing

Keep in mind just regular driving, I haven't raced, autoX, time trials since this coversion.

Well a week ago, coming up to a stoplight I pushed down on the clutch pedal to put myself into neutral. I heard a pop and the clutch pedal stayed down on the floor and never came up. I also noticed that I couldn't get the car into any gear. I even tried to pull the pedal back by hand which didn't work.

Today, my mechanic dropped the engine/tranny, noticed that both ears on the throwout (release) bearing had broke off.

I immediately called up Sachs North America and asked if it is normal for this to happen, they said that it could happen if there was something preventing the pressure plate to open.
So I check the pressure plate, clutch, guide tube, clutch fork, everything looked perfect. So both my mechanic and I are puzzled in why the release bearing (ears) would just break off.

So I ended up purchasing a new release bearing, and a new pressure plate ( thinking it was the problem before dropping the engine). The new pressure plate I got is no longer the Motorsports Racing, but instead the stock 964.116.028.90 Pressure Plate / RS.

Now that I have no clue why the release bearing ears broke off, I'm also debating if I should go back to the stock pressure plate. According to Sachs N.A. I should use the Motorsports Racing PP since I have increased the rearwheel hp from a stock 210 to 245hp=280 to 290 hp at the engine. According to Sachs, their Motorsport Racing PP provides more clamping force than the Turbo Pressure plate. This is the recommended PP for all 964s, 993s, all turbos, even the 2001 Turbo.

Has anyone else used a Sachs Motorsports Racing Pressure Plate?
Has anyone else experience the ears of the release bearing breaking off?

Thanks
GP

You didn't replace the release fork.... Always replace the fork, no matter what. The new Motorsport clutch is more powerfull in pressure, so the tension on the fork will be more then with a regular pressure plate.

Also, you don't need to upgrade your clutch with that sort of power. I would use stock RS parts.

Hi Arjan, I did replace the clutch fork during the conversion, sorry forgot to mention it.

Thanks GP

Any other suggestions out there?

If I decide to go back to the RS Pressure Plate and sell the Motorsports Racing Pressure Plate, would anyone on Rennlist that does race be interested. This PP fits all 964s, 965s, 993s, 993tt, and the 2001 Turbo, according to Sachs catalog.
