Default Yokohama AVS Sport story

I ran into an issue when trying to mount the AVS sport in sizes 205/50-17 and 255/40-17 on my 90'C2 with 7 inch and 8 inch wheel widths. The tire shop could NOT get the rears to mount on the rim. The wheels are cup 2's and powdercoated, but, there is very little paint on the inside of the wheel so I don't think that's the issue. the claim was that the tire was too wide for the 8" wheel, which in comparison to the Pzeros laying next to it, the AVS was roughly 1/2 wider a tire. Is the tire shop incompetent? Are the tires too wide for the 8" wide wheel? What are my options? I really don't want to do the Pirellis again if I have a choice.

Tough question. The spec sheet for AVS's indicates that the rim should be from 8-1/2" - 10" for their 255/40. But I've seen RSA's, which I believe come with 8" rears, wearing the 255's.

Any RSA drivers have experience with this issue?

Take it to a new shop. I have 235/265 on my cup I, but I think my rears are 9". Looks like I could put 275's.

Here's another way of looking at this information:

Rim Size: 8" or 203mm
Tread Width: 255mm
Diff: 52mm

Rim Size: 9" or 229mm
Tread Width: 265mm
Diff: 36mm

Rim Size: 9-1/2" or 241mm
Tread Width: 275mm
Diff: 34mm

The combination you're planning to run, Eric, definitely represents a relatively large difference between rim and tread widths. I know of people using 245's on their 8" D90's or 16" Cups but can't confirm ever seeing a 255/8" combo. There might be more information at www.rsamerica.net

I'm running 255/40-17 on 8" Cup 1 rears - the tyres are Continental Sport Contacts (N1) - no rubbing, no spacers either before or after lowering. I think some 255s are wider than others, I guess it depends on the sidewall profile as to whether they'll fit safely.

most 255's require ideally an 8.5 inch rim - if you look at the guides. It usually doesn't mean you can't mount a 255, but that you are not getting the full benefit of the tyre....I would go to 9's ASAP. I have never heard of a 255 not mounting on the rim though, perhaps no one that I have met actually has tried it...
