Hi Jason

Whilst 9M have been wonderful as far as being accommodating and finding custom solutions, I guess with a cam cover they didn't want to get involved with it - they recommended getting a new with warranty and all that. I am sure they would be capable, but as I say perhaps they chose not to...I got a lower cam cover for around 100euros (which apparently is new), so if it seals I will be happy. If it doesn't then maybe I will try what you suggest..! Thanks for feedback

ms roadrace told me the $100 covers were sold out and due to Euro exchange rate, now the covers are $300 a pair.
Still acceptable copmpare to super expensive Porsche price!
I'll go check the condition of mine today and decide to buy a new set or re-surface them.

Thanks!

Default valve cover

what up Pat,

by the way does this price reflect the rennlist member discount? Pat these newer valve covers are very nice and made a lot better than the originals. i have seen them and they are nice. as far as resurfacing (please this is a personal opinion and dont want to offend anyone) i think this is not a fix due to that you are not making a uniform gap in the valley where the gaskets sets. all you are doing is truing the edge but the pinch pressure will not be uniform, i hope this makes sense. old style or new style let it be known that if over torqed they will be destoyed and you will be in the same boat. the rubber seals are like o-rings and depend on uniform pressure to seal all around and people think that more tighting to the covers will help when in actuality it makes it worse . you are deforming the covers and loose the uniform seal channel and they will leak. so to only resurface and not make the valley uniform you are defeating the purpose. but hey who am i. just dont want to waste your money and time. you never did mention if your leak now or not. if not than you will be ok as long as your mechanic torqes them to proper values.

The 1965-89 911 & 930 cam covers are flat and can be sanded or machined, whereas the 964 covers are cast with a groove to receive their profiled rubber seal. Leaks are usually caused by magnesium corrosion lifting the coating within this groove, and thus without CNC milling around the groove there is no way to reclaim a u/s cover. It is a shame that the 993 cover does not fit since these are made from moulded plastic, and I guess that nobody has bothered to remanufacture them since good ole Porsche would slash their price overnight if they though that there was competition out there.

Colin,
When you say the 964 covers are cast with a groove, where is the groove located? I have a 964 cover that has been sanded and an original cover and there is no difference in profile (MY1993 and I just checked with something that can measure a higher resolution than our eyes can probably detect/realize...) I've probably looked at the wrong area and missed something obvious but I'm still curious.

colin , is it right that there is a difference in -1990 cars to the later models ?
i think i read that later cars used magnesium instead of alloy , and these dont leak ??

What I heard is early cars use magnesium and later use aluminium alloy. Magnesium one sufferred from corrosion, while aluminium is not. I think the RS still use the magnesium one while normal models changed to aluminium in later model year.

My friend who has a 965 3.3 and also having engine rebuild said that his 965 has camshaft housing with 964 part number. Since 965 is using 930 upper valve covers, I'm curious if 964 can also use 930 upper cover? 930 covers are much cheaper than 964.
Another question is, why there are only aftermarket 964 lower covers but no upper covers? Is it because upper has fewer chance to leak?
Thanks!

Patrick,

I have a 91 C-2 also roubled with valve covers, so I also am looking for a pair of valve covers.
Is MSROADRACE an European company? otherwise the euro exchange rate has nothing to do with the price. Still, I have to admit that 300 US a pair is very good already. Obviously, 100US will be even better.

Cheers!'

Eddie

Are valve covers different on the early 964's?
This is from MY1993.
