What is the problem with high mileage tiptronics (100,000 on a 90 or 91)
I have been hearing that the trans does not allow the engine to "work hard enough", will that cause some engine problems....??
Never heard about it not working hard enough except if you leave it in pokey auto mode all the time! If you want it to work harder put in in stick mode and mash it as hard as you want. It wont let you over rev or mess up by shifting the wrong way! I dont think that hitting the rev limiter on a daily basis could be to good on an engine but maybe i am wrong. I keep hearing the Tip is bullet proof.

No problems here except when on the track, the unresponsiveness/slow gear changes (torque converter) is very annoying. IMHO, the tip gear box is more than adequate for daily driver especially in LA traffic. Most Porsche experts agree that the Tip box is bullet-proof.
I hear the Tip is one of the strongest gear boxes ever developed by Porsche. I romp on mne all the time. I agree the torque converter lag to lock up is a bummer. In LA traffic it is golden. Onee think I do is keep it in 3rd when in auto mode and this forces it to take off in first gear. I hear this was fixed on 92 and later versions. I really hate the ting trying to take off in second gear when in drive.
Daniel, Can't understand where this comes from. Tip or 5 Speed - it's the driver and the use of the car in an "environment" that would impact the engine life. You can abuse a 964 with Tip or a Stick - but you can't over rev a Tip. You can lug the Stick at to low revs ... but the Tip will cope with that by downshifting or just letting the Torque Converter do the work. So I think overall the Tip equipped car has a much better chance of surviving out on todays roads. IMHO
