Default * MELTED dip stick tube! What a MESS

Melted right above the tire - oil POURED on the tire, what a huge mess and nearly caused a spin while on track. 1992 C2.

See pics - ANYONE ever had this happen?

You take the award for weirdest thing I have seen all day. How was it routed? Was it run up high with the breather hoses. There really should not be oil in that tube when running normally so I can't see it melting from the inside out. Was it rubbing agains the metal bracket up there?

From the looks of the photos you provided something got very hot within the tube and found its way out rather than something hot on the outside and burning a hole into the tube. It almost looks like something other than oil which is allowed to circulate and cool was caught in the tube at that point. The bubble shaped hole it left, tells me it wasn't a solid but rather a liquid that got above the rated melting temperature of the tube. I can't imagine anything other than oil and maybe a little H2O (and at that temperature water would boil off) being in there and for the oil not to circulate it may have been caught in an air lock?

Best I could do in my diagnoses

Might have been a defect in the plastic. might have had an air bubble in the plastic or a thin spot that melted. Thats just a guess...I would show it to the Porsche zone rep and see if Porsche will honor the repair.

The degree of deformation shows the tube was quite hot, but if this happened on the track, the engine was making full power and everything would be hot. The tube is swollen around the rupture. This is a a classic aneurism, with rupture at the location where the aneurism went unstable. This is an over-pressure failure. I would be looking at the crankcase vent for blockage, and the rings for excessive blow-by.

Question

Could a piece of hot race tire rubber gotten up on it and melt it? My 914 collects a lot of rubber in the wheel wells on a track day. I'm not sure how hot those rubber pieces are. Does anyone know?
