Default Brake upgrade

After a weekend at Mugello (photo report will follow this weekend) I need new discs and pads.
Since this would be a good opportunity to upgrade, I wonder whether anybody of you has had experiences with the RUF BTR brake kit?
Apparently they use some of the many available turbo calipers up front and RS calipers at the rear on drilled discs.
The reason I am interested in RUF rather than a simple big red kit is that they offer to bring them through the roadworthiness authorities, something not to be underrated here in Switzerland.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Anatol, I have the big red kit on my car (coming from FVD). I still don't know what mess it will be with the authority when they'll ask to inspect the car, but it's only porsche parts... and some of my friends already had the inspection and said it was an option...
BTW, that kit represents a huge improvement! Not only the power (which is really very good) but also the reliability. As this system is far much powerful, and you can use stock pads with the same efficiency you would get from your stock calipers and drilled disks with pagid pads. Moreover, this kit represents also a big improvement of the look inside your wheels
Do you already have 4 plots calipers on rear wheels?

What's the price of RUF kit?

NTTY,
Thank you for your reply.
I have just got 4pots at the rear, not yet installed though.
Ruf asks CHF 5500 if you have the 4pots at the rear.
I am somewhat sceptical whether it would be easy to get a 964 with big reds through a swiss inspection. They don't even accept 9" Cup replicas instead of the 8" originals! But it may vary from canton to canton...

Dear Anatol,
As you know, like myself as you have, fallen foul of the authorities with wheels etc, you will need paperwork. Elite-Sportwagen are the Swiss agents/importers for RUF. If you purchase a full RUF brake upgrade kit you will need a certificate from them saying they are approved.
These inspectors pounce on anything that does not look correct or that deviates from standard. They seem to be able to notice these things very quickly.

One thing to be very careful about is that your current wheels fit over the new callipers. Most RUF kits require 18 inch wheels to provide the necessary clearance. This kit may not but you should check. Even if they say 17 inch wheels are okay some may still not be okay. I know people with 17 inch Fiskes that ran into this problem.

Sportec do not offer a 964 brake upgrade kit as of yet. One of the reasons they are doing the 19 inch wheel certification (currently installed on my C4) is so their standard "Sportec" calliper and brake rotors can be installed onto the 964. There will be a kit for the hydraulic boosted systems and another for the vacuum boosted systems. They will be approved kits as well. It is just going to take some time.

Ciao,
Adrian

Adrian,

Have you installed the Turbo hubs or done anything to support 19" rims?

The current testing involves monitoring the items which may be suspect (I have a C4 and they did not suffer the same problems as the C2 with the front wheel carriers anyway).
The "suspect" components are removed and inspected at specific intervals.
Load runs have already been completed on the dyno. It was scary watching this. I left and went and had a coffee.
We have yet to do the the bump check. You know the rippled road.
My suspension is very stiff so that will be fun. Kidney belt anyone
If these tests carried out IAW the laid down requirements are passed then the paperwork will be submitted for certification.
The car will then be handed over the MFK people for their tests and if these all pass then we get certification.
Then the same process will be carried out for the C2.
If all this goes to plan then the TÜV certification will be carried out.
Sportec are doing all of this I am just along for the ride and a little of the driving.

PS: Sportec are wheels experts. They developed the solution for the Audi RS4 wheel bending problem and designed a wheel which did not bend on the RS4.
The same equipment, procedures and expertise is being used to prove the safety of the 19 inch wheels on the 964.

And, although not for sale, lightweight caliper adaption brackets.

Dear Bill,
I should also point out that a standard suspension C4 and C2 will also need to be tested.
For the USA, the US versions of the 964 will also need to be tested before wheels can be offered.
This is a slow process and involved process.
The ROW 993/996 and up models are done but the same process will need to be checked for standard suspension set ups on US models.
The 997 arrives this Thursday I believe and work on that will start immediately.

19" on a 964! Now you're talking! Any chance of a few pics Adrian? Are they the wheels in your avatar?
Thanks in advance.

Dear Dave,
Yes the silver ones on the C4 and the GT-2. On the other side are the specially treated gun metal colour wheels. On the home page of my web site you will also see the pictures of both sides of the car.
I prefer the wheels on the left side on the C4 and the gun metal wheels on the GT-2.
The front tyres by the way are 225/30R19s and the rears 265/30R19s. Understeer has increased a tad.
I must point out that all that is written here only applies to the Sportec 19 inch wheels. The certification will only be for Sportec wheels. Any other installations you are on your own.
Sportec have also developed (prototypes fitted to the C4) a DIY easy to install 10 mm steering stop for the 1989 to 1991 model years that have not had the modification done and are using spacers to compensate.
Ciao,
Adrian
