91 C2 Slipping between 3,000-4,000 RPM
My 91 C2 slips betwen 3,000 and 4,000 RPM upon medium to hard throttle input.
I noticed the problem recently when accelerating in 4th gear.
When I press the accelerator, the engine races after 3,000 RPM to about 4,500/5,000 RPM, before something engages, the revs drop back to 3,800 RPM and the car pulls normally.
Today, I noticed that I can replicate the slippage in 3rd and also in 5th gear.
Is this a common problem? What are the typical things that could cause this? What sort of repairs am I looking at? It seems like it's going to be very expensive...

It sounds very much like your clutch is slipping.
Not sure what it costs for C2s (or what it costs in the States) - but I would guess a C2 clutch is probably £500 fitted here.

JZM quote £825 + the VAT which comes to a nice, round £970 or about $1750 (mainly due to the strong exchange rate - I guess it'll actually be a lot cheaper than that in the US).

For a C2? I thought they were supposed to be quite a bit cheaper than C4s (since it's not an engine out job) and I was told ages and ago that a clutch would cost me about £1000 - £1100 (more if I needed the flywheel).

I think they're average prices - JZM are usually pretty well priced and are a very good outfit (I'm actually thinking of switching to them the next time I need a service). Was just a bit surprised - I always got the impression C2 clutches cost a lot less to fit than C4s. Obviously when mine is due I'd like it to be £200 less, but I always thought the difference was bigger.
I wonder how many people have ever had a top end overhaul where it matched the basic price? I bet there's never been one that didn't need something extra "while we're in there"!

My mechanic quoted about 5hrs labour, plus a clutch kit. Clutch kit is £275 at Type-911. All plus VAT(sales tax) of course. Works out at around £600. LAst year, on my old C4, he fitted a new clutch, flexi hose and an LUK flywheel. All for £1200 including VAT. Considering a new flywheel is around £500, it's not bad going!

If no oil comes out the bell house [who covers the clutch/fly wheel area] you can bet your clutch is worn out. Please check first if no other things could be the probem, such as master or slave cylinder from the clutch, a dry shaft [rust] who causes a 'not returning to rest' clutch.
I drove once a 993 who's pedal was not coming back in original position, the clutch slipped, but the slave cylinder [on the gear box] was the cause of the trouble.

Andy,
Who is your mechanic? The £1100 I was quoted was without a flywheel (admittedly it was a couple of years ago). I was told it would cost me about £1500 if I needed a flywheel.

Dave,
It was by Hamilton & Palmer, who are based in Stratford, east London. The chap who always services my car is Joe. I can PM you his mobile number if required!

Three Wheelin'
By all means, get this looked at ASAP...if it is something minor, maybe they can fix that and leave the clutch. Otherwise, the slippage may wear out the clutch pre-maturely, if it is something else. It doesn't sound like something that going to get any better, so it needs to be looked at. May as well do it now....

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I've resigned myself to getting the work done this week. Unfortunately, the previous owner said that the clutch/flywheel had been replaced. I tracked down the original mechanic who did the work. He confirmed that he did it, but used a set-up from another car that had 9,000 miles on it.
Basically, I got screwed....

Patrick, if you were closer to SoCal area, I could do this job for ya and save you some money. Look up ViperBob on the 993 board, he is in your area and does great work and should be able to save you money as well. Just search viperbob and you should see his email info..
