Hey 964 pros, what do you think of this one?
I've been on a Porsche hunt for a little while (long time fan). I've basically just been trying to look at as many cars as possible to get a good feel for what is out there. Have looked mostly at 3.2 G50 Carreras, but I've found a local 964 that looks promising. I've read tons on these cars and at first, was a little nervous about oil leaks etc. I understand a little more about it now though.
I will of course do a PPI before any purchase, but I was just wondering what people's impressions were of this car:
Nice looking 964
The price in US$ is approx. 27K and 148000 km is approx. 92K miles.
Just interested in general comments and suggestions.
Thank you for looking!

Looks nice, but is overpriced (unless the Canadian market is more expensive than the U.S. market). However, don't forget about it. Often, overpriced cars don't sell and after 2 months or so the price may drop considerably. In the meantime, keep looking and be patient!

I just paid (July 23rd) $25k for my 92 Cab w/49,000 california miles... mint... Did not haggle. Was high on a '91 Cab/tip with 71k for $24 mint and another 91 cab manual with 83k for $24k mint.. I searched for about a week. on line only.

I purchased almost two years ago. That car would have been overpriced compared to what I had to choose from, and prices have dropped quite a bit since then. I paid $27,500 for an unmolested 42,000 mile garage-kept C2 in September 2002. I looked at every Porsche 911 near Atlanta priced between $25K and $50K for about four months, private owners and dealers. I knew the local market pretty well.
The modifications and extra miles detract from value. The stereo and seats add, but only if in good shape. My guess is that $25K is top money for that car, but only if it drives great, has no collision history, and has zero mechanical issues on the PPI.

In Canada, that is the going price give or take for a real nice example. I payed more for my 89 and bought it 3-4 months ago However, I only had 67miles and mine has never seen rain till I purchased it. Plus it had a full engine rebuild from top to bottom. For the amount of KM on that car, and if everything is AOK, just as Delhi said.. low $30's
That particular P-car has been for sale for a while. I am sure they are getting ansy to sell.

How 'bout a Cab?
For our US based friends, yes the pricing is higher in Canada (applies to all Porsches) and does not equate with the current US/CDN exchange rate of approx 1.30. In addition, there is a 6.1% import duty on US cars coming into Canada which further confuses the apples to apples comparison. The pricing difference is, I think, mostly due to supply vs. demand. US has generally accounted for 50% of Porsche production, Canada 5% or less. Add to the import duty 15% sales tax, and the $25,000 US car becomes approx $40,000 CDN by the time it has been "Canadianised", taxed and on the road up here. For most states, sales tax on used cars is very low - let's assume 5% for now. If my math is close to correct, that means that the 'adjusted' price for a $25k car in the US is closer to $30k US or to put it another way, approx 20% higher in Canada vs. the US.
Allan - if you're interested in a Cabrio, I have a low mileage C4 cab for sale on the PCA site. Willing to deal on the price.

Ps. And I believe the exchange is at 1.36 give or take. You may be talking prime.

True - buy USD @ 1.36 or so, sell USD @ 1.3 or so.
I managed to find a 993 cab in the US and bring it up for between $5 and $8k less than an equivalent would have been here - had I been able to find a true equivalent. Seems that 993 pricing differences between the US and Canada are even further apart.
Back to the topic - that car looks great and I would not worry about the 148,000km. Make sure it's been taken care of, and get a PPI from a shop you trust. Find out if it's had a valve job - if not (and it is not burning oil or blowing smoke), plan on one within the next 25,000 - 50,000km. And if it's been driven on the track, all the better. Cars that go on the track get inspected far more frequently, any problems show up quickly and generally get sorted out immediately, and things like oil, brake fluids get changed more frequently. Be cautious of the low mileage garage queen. You pay more up front and will likely be into all sorts of expen$ive problems once you actually start to drive it.

Wow, thanks everyone for the comments. It does help me apply some perspective. As far as that particular car goes, I'm still too up in the air anyway. I'm trying to sell my (nice) WRX first and then buy a nicer P-Car like a 911/964. Otherwise, I just may invest in a decent shape 944 and have fun doing a "detail" restoration (I like working on cars about as much a driving them).
Richard, I have seen your Cab on the site, but alas, I'm not a fan of convertibles. Thanks for offer though.

Remember that driving them is more fun than shopping for them (or working on them for that matter).
Good luck with your search (I might have considered a part trade on the WRX ).

I bought mine in Vancouver and had it shipped to Calgary last winter. My take is that a nice C2/4 should bring about $30K-$35K CAD in the winter and $35K-$40K in the summer. Looked at importing a US p-car but to get on the road was about 1.5 times price in US $ so price seemed about the same.
