Speedo failiure
Hi all - new to 964's (had mine a week!) and new to this group. Had a problem over the weekend with an intermittent speedo failiure, also occasional problem with the spoiler not retracting when it should. Have looked around the forum and seen one similar problem, which was identified as a potential failure of the speedo sensor mounted on the transmission. Given that i havent (yet!) got adrian's book can anyone please tell me how i find this sensor and presumably clean it?
It is surprisingly difficult to drive without a speedo, particually given the number of speed cameras here! Help please!
thanks - G.

Hi, Graham.
We need to know what year your car is.
While you get to that, try pulling the speedo out and breaking/remaking the connection on the back of it. This worked for me. For a while...
Edit: When the speedo fails, does it ALL go - i.e. miles and needle?

it is a 1990 C4, and yes, it all went: miles and needle.
Pulling the speedo out is realtively easy i presume as i gather that these dials are just a push fit into the dash?

Thanks - any tips from unfortunate souls who've damaged either the dash or the dial doing this?! I've heard that you can prise them out with a fabric covered flat bladed screwdriver...am a little reluctant to take a screwdriver to my new (to me) lovely!
Cheers for the help so far guys - it really is much appreciated. Wish Amazon weren't going to take 6 weeks to deliver the workshop guide!

That's what i did, use the screw driver with fabic covered, just be gentle and do it slowly from one side to another, if you can get it out a little by little then it start to come out easier.
hope this help.

Much appreciated - thanks. Hope this works otherwise it's a trip to a specialist for me to sort the sensor. Bit annoying a week into ownership! It's a good job the car is utterly gorgeous!
Thanks - all in all a very helpful introduction to the forum, cheers.

Graham,
When you take the speedo out a word of advice for getting back in.
once you have the speedo out remove the rubber surround and wipe the inside with some washing up liquid, replace it into the hole in the dash and feed the wires through it. Then when you come to replace the speedo you should find it easy to slide the speedo back inside the rubber surround with just a little twisting motion.
