Default Cluth travel- dead spot

Just curious if this is normal. My clutch operates normal, but I noticed a little bit of a dead spot from the top of the travel- like the first 1/2-inch when you push the pedal there's little to no resistance if that makes sense. Then it feels fine, just a little freeplay at the top of the pedal

Thanks !

Check your clutch pedal roll pin. It may be partially collapsed. You may also want to bleed the clutch slave. If you have a small bubble there, it will limit the movement at first.

Thanks. I'll check the roll pin. The clutch works fine, catches fine, it's just a little bit of free play at the top of the travel.

Surprised with the little responses here, as I've been searching and the 964/993 pedal kinematics seems to be a well-known issue. I am changing the slave, clutch master and making a new stainless clutch line today and will see how that fares. I'm not sure any of it is needed, as it seems the arm itself needs some lube as it follows a pivot point as it travels. We'll see.

Did you confirm roll-pin situation? I had my roll pin partially collapse on the back-side only. Visual inspection from the front looked OK. I got frustrated with my inconsistent clutch pedal feel and pulled the pedal assembly. Sure enough, the back-side of the roll pin had collapsed. I replaced the roll pin with new, and the clutch action was restored.

It looked okay, but maybe I will pull the pedals totally. I can see if it's slightly mangled, it will screw with the movement through it's arc. The floor mounted pedals seem to swing around an axis a little different than normal ones. At least the assembly looks easy to pull in/out.

Thanks!

it is - a simple afternoon job. Replace the roll pin and bushings while it's out.

on my '91 (Turbo) - I replaced the master, slave and roll pin (old one was barely even worn) and still have that little bit of "free play" -
Haven't looked into it any further...

Ordered new roll pin from dealer, but being impatient went to Ace Hardware, they seemed to have all the sizes. I think it's m6.

The only way to really inspect the roll pin is the remove the pedal assembly. At that point, I would suggest replacing it and also checking the bushing for wear. Any slop in the system adds up and makes the pedal feel bad.

By the way, when you have the pedal assembly out, I would also check the angle of your roll pin. Mine was drilled wrong. Replacing the clutch pedal, fixed my problem.

Thanks. My pedal immediately moves the master and feels tight, I'm going to start with just doing the slave and new line. Line should be here tomorrow, car is sitting till then. Redid the axle boots, will do the new slave, line and bleed and see how it is. If still not 100%, will do the master and new pedals, bushings/roll pin. I have the parts. I bought a few roll pins, the OEM is beefier than anything I found locally. I think it was $2.30 from Porsche. Probably the cheapest part there. My local Parts Authority had the FTE clutch master and slave in stock, go figure.

Update. Just got the slave and stainless line installed and bled (a failed master in my 996 caused me to stop work). Pedal feels great and it’s only a touch light at the top, but under tension throughout. Seems ok.

I did put a touch of red grease on the tip of the slave cylinder before sticking it into the trans. It was quiet for two seconds and now I hear a squeak when pushing the clutch in/out and it sounds like it’s from the rear. Just annoying or should I bother with anything?

thanks !

After a quick drive, clutch feels great. I didn’t realize how low it was catching before, almost off the floor. Now it’s almost at the top of the travel. Feels awesome.

The old slave rubber line looked old and I’m sure wasn’t helping the problem.
