Default Checking Distributor Belt

I have a 93 964. I want to make sure the distributor belt is intact. I read somewhere where you can take the coil off of the primary distributor and if the car starts, the belt must be functioning. Can anyone please verify that this is ok to do. Also, which distributor is the primary? The one on the top?

Thanks

You can check it by disconnecting the Primary coil wire from the primary distributor. Thus, if the belt if OK, the belt will turn the secondary distributor & the car should start from that.

Oops! Thr primary is the one which has a large metal bit sticking out of the bottom, going into the engine (You should be able to see what I mean when looking at it!!) I think it's the one nearest to the back of the car.

If you don't know when the belt was last replaced, why not prevent the failure and replace it? Several people have done the swap and report that it was not difficult.

I have the same dilemma as you. My secondary rotor is turning, and I have the vent kit installed. However there is no record of the belt ever being replaced. It feels like a ticking time bomb, especially on long trips.

Performance Products and Mid America (Tweeks) don't list the belts. I will check Pelican, but if anyone has leads on where to get the belt, please post.

Springer,

I just had my belt changed for safety's sake. I think my spanner got it from www.type-911.co.uk or www.design911.co.uk . Only £9!! They will both ship to the US. I'm sure though that Pelican or someone will stock it in the states. Cost me 2 hrs labour to have him change it over.

The safest place to get it is your local dealer. It is pretty cheap. Probably one of the least expensive parts you will buy in your car's lifetime.

Already on order from Pelican. $9 + $5 shipping. If only the labor was that painless!

I had the Porsche rebuilt distributor installed with the 'Z' stamped in. Around 350 Euro's in Europe I think. I will replace it after 75000 kilometers [46000 miles sprox.]
Then you have also new bearings and stuff, all fresh again.

Thanks for all the input.

How hard is the belt to replace? Seems like it would be a pretty easy deal to mess up.
