Hi Jon,

Good to see a Washingtonian on the board. Since you live in the North West I am wondering why you chose to put your try back on? And what temp do you usually see in typical weather?

Note to Nine64 - good option to buy a used try would be dismantlers or call local porsche Specialist in hot climates - they may have them laying around.

Buying new does not sound good.

I don't remember where I read it, but somewhere in the service manual, owner's manual, or sales literature it states that air-flow management is one reason for the trays running the full length of the 964.

Another reason for the tray under the engine is noise control - it keeps the engine sound from reflecting off pavement. The tray also keeps the engine clean, and it will help protect the engine if you scrape bottom or objects are thrown up from the road.

Early 911s had the engine exposed, and they do get more dirt and damage than a 964 with tray.

Weight savings is the biggest reason for removing any or all of the under trays.

Having the undertray off helps for easier inspection of the motor on a regular basis.

I've also read that Porsche specifically designed the underside of the 964 to be relatively flat to aid with the reduction of co-efficient of drag, etc., hence all of the undertrays on our cars.

If I ever get to the level of full car concours, I'm puttin' my tray back on!

nine64,

Christer is right! It's up to you whether you want to keep one or not.
IMHO, the hot climate in Bankok you 'd better take it off for better ventilation.
Last month I went to a Prosche specialist in HongKong for servicing and noticed there were something like half a dozen undertraies in the corner. I was told that the owners left them for the summer but most of them never bothered to pick them back up again.
So take it off and see what happens, if you need one then there will be loads from these centres. If you have problem finding any in Thailand then I can help you to find one in Hong Kong.

Happy motoring.

Hi nine64

I took mine off for 4 reasons:

1 I'd rather oil dripped on the drive/garage floor than collected on a tray near to a hot exhaust;
2 Better cooling in hot weather (it does work);
3 Less weight;
4 More noise (I didn't notice the difference.

Since taking it off, I have left it off but always intended to put it back on if I had to drive when the roads were salted.

Regards

Nine64,

Me too, I am teaching in a local college and shall have a long summer vacation. So if you can come to Hong Kong in the Summer, I shall be able to show you some nice part of Hong Kong with my 964.

Cheers!

My car has it's undertray and still drips oil everywhere! Personally, I love that burning oil smell and the plumes of blue smoke coming from the wheel arch.

I read that the undertray did dramatically improve the air flow and thus the drag coefficient of the car over the previous model.

My oil catcher is a bit rough but the mechanic says it's not bad based on what he's seen. PO bottomed out a few times. Mech says underbody aerodynamics as much a reason as anything. MB has been using them for 15-20 years now. He does think cooling will be a bit better here during the hot months. My two cents.
