Thanks to Doug Boyce I now have a copy of his diagnostic software and it works great using my opto isolated iso9141 converter.

To do what? Can you read codes; clear codes? Control any of the drive links? From the name of it - diagnostic software - it sounds like you can just read the codes, right?

Very interesting, fill us in!!

Dear Doug,

It is nice to see you again. Thanks for your help in examining the montronic
codes quite a while ago. I did not succeed then but will try again. I have lost
you email since I moved to a new flat.

Can I have a copy of your program and schematics too ?

BR,

Felix Leung.

In reply to garrett376

Motronic: Read/clear fault codes, read inputs, read actual values, work outputs (drive links), reset system & idle adaption.

Climate control: Read/clear fault codes.

ABS & Air Bags are also listed but I have not tried them as not fitted to my car.

As I said, it works great. For most people just reading/clearing fault codes would be enough but there is much more.

Wow, Pete, that is excellent! You should put together a kit for distribution!

DougB states:

The 964's "command codes" were discovered by reverse engineering the Motronic ECU software.

pncarrerrars states:

Climate control: Read/clear fault codes.

If the just the DME EPROM code was disassembled, how were the other ECUs' command
codes obtained, e.g. for the CCU, Airbag, & Tiptronic, or was the Hammer "reversed"?

The procedure for reading and clearing fault codes is exactly the same for all the ECUs in the 964. So once you figure out Motronic, you can do them all.

But not for driving the various ECU outputs nor for readings the actual ECU's specific
input data.

True. That's why the software can not operate the PDAS differential locks like the hammer can. Difficult to figure unless you can back-engineer the PDAS ECU or have access to a Hammer and a protocol sniffer.

In M.H.O. (and probably many others') it is apparent Porsche just doesn't care. The Hammer was archaic when it came out, way slow, etc. and not worth the $5000 plus it took to buy it. All the Kraut car companies work the same way; keep any knowledge within the franchised sphere and destroy any "old" diagnostic stuff to prevent the people that really care about the cars from achieving an advantage. Over who??? The techs that were 12 years old when the cars were new?? How about the client?? Show me a dealer that will treat an owner of a 15 year old Porsche with the respect they give a gold-chain coke-head Boxster or Cayenne lessee and I'll show you an invisible persona. Let's have a poll and see how many 964 owners ( the most egregiously affected of all P-car owners) love their franchised dealers!!!

Adrian or ???,

Do you know the exact procedure to put the car into self diag to be able to read the CEL codes?
I'm used to the GM's which you connect 2-pins and read the flashes...

Thanks,
Dave

You'll probably be shamed for resurrecting an 11 year old thread but the answer to your question is here:

Cheers!
