Oil level overfilled.

It's really easy to unscrew the oil drain plug for the oil tank, and let out about a quart or so. Do it when cold, and it flows nice and slow. I did this a while back after getting my car, noticing it was overfilled. Just wear a glove since you'll get messy fingers holding the drain plug...

Hi,
Given that it's a dry sump engine the oil level in the tank is not AS important as it is in a regular wet sump although it should be kept at or marginally below the full mark whenever possible.
My own 964 was overfilled by the supplying garage when I bought it - to the tune of some 3 litres!!! The oil level gauge shot up to the top almost as soon as the car was started and the car was driven like that for no more than 200 miles. Once the problem was recognised and the excess drained off everything went back to normal.
I'd guess that an extra quart or so is unlikely to be noticed, much less do any damage.
Regards
Dave

The engine should get rid of any excess oil on its own. Check your tail pipe after the car is cool and you will probably find some oily residue in it. Also, check your air filter, it could also have some residue too.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I have drained nearly a quart out of the engine in order to get the level to read just below the full mark on the oil gauge. The bottom of the engine seems to be showing more oil leaks than before so I was wondering if it could be caused by the overfill condition. Can you believe that my Porsche mechanic overfilled it after adjusting the valves? Just can't trust anyone these days.
