Default thumping noise

over the past two months i've been experiencing a noisy thumping noise from under the c4 when applying moderate to heavy brake pressure at anything above 40 or 50mph (not abs different feeling) and has been getting worse each week but this evening the noise got a lot worse and was there even without braking
i tried snaking down the road and the noise disapeared on left handers and came back on the straight and right handers and was still there on low speeds
any ideas
thanks

Where's it coming from? Front or rear?

Dear David,
I would be checking my half shafts if I was you. If one shears you will find yourself going nowhere fast.
I recommend when such things occur that you do not drive the failing component to destruction. Find the fault. Certain failures are not only expensive but can be somewhat dangerous to deadly if they fail at speed. Any strange noises when braking should immediately be investigated.
I apologise for sounding a little like the school headmaster but we have not lost a 964 owner here yet and none of us want to start now.
Ciao,
Adrian

thanks adrian
assuming it is the half shaft would it be the side which is taking the load on steering and what would i look for to determine what is wrong as i have been under the car a few times and cannot find any thing unusual on either side , freeplay etc
