Although some of your answers are a bit funnier, I vote for more along the lines that Youcef stated. I've seen that in a couple of other parts as well, there are six intake "trumpets" required for the top of the motor, WHY make the middle ones any differently?
It's one of those cost-cutting issues - SEE, the 964 really IS a CHEAP Porsche!

On closer inspection, I'm convinced Youcef and Jeff are right.
While we are here, be careful when you tighten the 10mm nut which anchors the air box to the flange on the inlet manifold. Just as I reached the 'I think this as tight as I should go' point, the rubber buffer sheared in half!
The part left behind on the flange was a pig to get out.

I hate it when that happens......or when the service tech has put locknuts on, and you undo them only to find the rubber has sheared, not the nut coming undone.........I've destroyed 3 now......and I didn't think I was hamfisted........oh well.
