Default Just picked up a 1991 C2 Targa!

After looking around for almost a year, I just took delivery of a 1991 C2 Targa, white/black, 71k miles. In great mechanical condition but needs a little of of TLC (which began before I took delivery). It arrived this morning from Arizona, where the previous owner, who owns AZ Euros, helped me get a suspension refresh done and made delivery super easy. He had a set of BBS E88s on it already, so since I was planning on getting those eventually, he included them plus the D90s.

I'll use this as a build thread of sorts – details on the suspension refresh to follow. My initial focus will be refreshing the interior a bit, with new door pockets and Rennline door handles. I'm planning exhaust, stereo refresh (currently has a janky 20-year-old Alpine set up), 9Eleven headlights, and an FD short shifter. It will need some paint work here and there at some point also, and probably a refinishing of the Targa bar. Luckily it's already had AC upgraded, clutch master/slave replaced, and very minimal oil leaks (although I will likely do Rennline billet upper and lower covers anyways).

Here she is in my garage after taking my 6yo daughter for her first spin.

As I mentioned above, the seller is the owner of AZ Euros in Mesa, AZ. The car had a set of "low" H&R coils which had the car too low for my preferences, and in general was going to need a suspension refresh. His shop has a great Porsche tech, so we decided to have his shop do the work (benefits us both).

I got a lot of great advice from fellow RL'ers on what to get. Here's what went in:
  • KW V1 coilovers
  • Pretty much all the rubber bushings Elephant Racing sells
    • Front control arm front bushings – sport hardness
    • Control arm rubber bushings – sport hardness
    • Rear trailing arm bushings
    • OEM rear shock upper mounts
    • OEM front strut upper mounts
    • Front and rear swaybar bushings
    • Spring plate sealed monoball kit
  • OEM ball joints
  • Elephant Racing front and rear adjustable drop links
  • Elephant Racing bumper steer correcting tie rod kit
  • Rothsport steering rack bushings
  • FD Motorsports steering rack brance
We set the car up at RS-spec ride height and alignment.

What about the refresh suspensions : are they not too hard for a Targa. ?

Nice targa. I bought my coupe from Chad as well—more then two years ago. He likes 18” gold centered wheels (Fifteen52 brand in my case) and a slammed stance. Great guy, I spoke with him last year when he got your car.
I also refreshed the suspension on my car with much the same ER parts. It was two years ago and getting KW, or any other coil overs was nearly impossible. I went with ER custom valved coil overs as the quickest option.
Enjoy!

I assume it's the exact same as a coupe. I didn't do the work myself, but I think the hardest part with these installs is pressing bushings out and in of existing parts (like the control arms). Elephant sells press adapters for this purpose which make this fairly straightforward if you have a press.

@forbiddenbeat Congrats, car is a beauty looks great in white. I picked up a midnight blue 1992 C2 Targa recently as well and am going a bit further with it than I originally imagined. Mine was pretty beat up, yours looks beautiful already and sounds like you’re already enjoying the drive. Mine wasn’t in any condition to use once it arrived. Currently the engine is out for a complete rebuild, everything being redone and where possible upgraded to 993 parts (keeping 3.6). Brembo brakes all around. Also redoing suspension, ironically I just purchased the H&R Low setup (full euro suspension) and am doing all the bushings as well. FabSpeed exhaust, 100 cell cats, air box, heater tube, strut tower brace etc. Also have e88s on order. The interior is being completely gutted and redone, nothing will be left alone, same with the targa top and bar. Short shift/golden rod too. Sounds like we are on similar but different paths. I will watch your thread and look forward to following along.

I am in San Diego, once the cars are done we will have to find a way to get them together….excited to hear someone else is on a similar journey.

I haven’t updated my original thread but will kick it off again once I have some pics of the work being done.

Best of luck and congrats again

Thank you! And that sounds like quite the project. Would definitely love to get the cars together sometime in the future!

I've ordered a cup pipe and exhaust tip from FVD, so those will be going on next.

I see you got those center cap pieces taken off real quick, LOL! All the guys would say stuff about them, how they clicked and made noise when I would roll up. People at cars and coffee would look at me like, "WTF is that noise". I wasn't bothered by them, but the wheels look proper with them off.

Glad its in good hands.

Enjoy!
Out of hundreds, probably thousands of cars that I've owned over the years, the Baltic Blue car was my favorite, and the hardest one to part ways with. Buying a house was an excellent choice at the time, so it had to go, but it's good to see it.

PS - I do like them low

Ha ha I drove home with it 1/4 mile from where I met the transporter, pulled in the driveway, and took them off lol. The clacking...not sure how you dealt with it.

And thanks again for selling it to me and making the process easy! It's definitely in good hands, and if you're out this way, open invite to take her out.
