Question 2?'s: magnet in your oil tank drain plug?... and an orange engine??

Just drained the oil last night to find that there is no magnet in my drain plug from the oil tank drain. It's just an empty plug!

Is that what everyone else has?? What's the point of NOT having a magnet - I'd rather have one than not!?

And, while I am surveying... anyone seen an orange engine??? I thought it was paint, but I can wipe it off. Never seen that before on an engine! Strange!

Cosmoline is the old-fashioned name for the coating, which is sprayed on items shipped over the ocean to protect from the salt air. It is designed to be removable, but I agree it is best left alone. My 964 engine is still original, and it has the coating.

I can't remember about the magnetic drain plug. I know for sure my 1970 911 had magnet plugs in the engine sump, the oil tank, and the transmission. They are easy enough to add, and they do collect stray particles.

There's a guy on the GT2/3 forum who spent weeks removing the cosmoline on his new GT2/3 with a tooth brush.......He's the only person who'll ever know!

Excellent insanity!

Garret....

There is NEVER a magnet on your drain plug in the oil tank. You have one on your drain plug in your crank case, at least you should have one overthere.

Yes, the wax on your engine is normal, and can be wiped off if you want that. I think you engine never was opened for whatever reason.

Intersting about the oil/wax stuff on there. I guess I'll leave it on. I am glad it is supposed to be there - I thought I might have been leaking oil and it was "fermenting" above the engine cover!!

And, I am glad there's not supposed to be a magnet on my drain plug - hate to have that floating through the system!!

Here's another view of my orange engine!
