Default Electrify your classic?

Hi there!

In light of ever increasing fuel prices and law makers and lobbyists threatening to enforce legislation increasingly banning the use of fossile fueled cars around the world, ever increasingly hassle of getting premium ethanol free fuel and fear of being stigmatized as a dinosaur burning up the planet, has anyone considered future proofing their classic Porsche by electrifying it, to be able to enjoy their beloved air cooled into the sunset?

Many companies like Everrati offer to convert your classic to EV. Prices seem quite high though. 200000GBP for a 964 Coupe. 2500000GBP for a WB.

I have a Telsa Model 3 and love the drive but there is still a place for my 964 and Spyder as ICE cars. If I was converting a car it would be a classic with an underpowered unreliable drivetrain.

I've considered it. Enough to actually call and talk to a few of the companies offering EV conversion kits.
At this time, it's still a very expensive proposition.
Right now, it's cheaper to rebuild my 3.6 a couple times AND fill the tank for the next 5 years (today prices) than to buy any available kit out there that gives me equal to better performance.

It seems like your rationale for considering electrifying your 964 is because you’re concerned you won’t be able to access fuel (cost, availability or legislation) - I really can’t see any of these thinks becoming a barrier to current ICE classic owners.

If this did happen however, my plan would be to keep the car as a monument to what it is rather than make it into a vehicle that looks classic, is electric but really will just be some half arsed compromise that will never as good as it was originally or as good as a production electric vehicle.

My view is keep the 964 ICE and buy an electric car if you want to or are forced to.

I prefer to drive golf carts on the golf course. We owned an Audi e-tron for a year, great vehicle with the exception of the charging limitations and we had a home charger. It was a complete pain in the ***, not only is the infrastructure nowhere near where it needs to be, having to stop and deal with charging is a waste of life, chargers are constantly broken and standing around in parking lots with an $80k vehicle sucks.

That's a problem with the infra in the US so far. Electrify America is the most garbage of all garbage companies. It's the reason that no matter what anyone thinks of them, Tesla and their supercharger network make it a much better experience that charging alone makes it worth opting for them instead of other available EV manufacturers (even ones that seem a little better like Lucid, etc).

LOL in all seriousness...Defeats the purpose of owning a classic car in my opinion. The smell of the exhaust, sound of the mechanical engine in motion and idle. Yes, gas prices cost a lot. This is no different than owning a v8 truck that drinks gasoline from a fire hose. Its a sacrifice we all make for our enjoyment. If we are truly forced to move to electric or illegal for us to drive an ICE vehicle. Then and only then will my car become a garage queen. In addition, I wouldn't want to deal with the headaches of working with a company to retrofit. Then it doesn't work right, sits on a lift for an ungodly amount of time, etc, etc.

That may be the case for some but personally, I don't like the vehicles enough for the charging stations to sway me. Tesla will will likely open up to other manufacturers eventually, they've been talking about it for years.

Charging has never been an issue for me and our EV. We trickle charge it every day at home/night. With 300 miles of potential range and only really using 50 a day in town is no problem.
So converting the 964 to EV would come down to initial cost. Which as I mentioned, is prohibitive.

Best of both worlds is to do the conversion, use the motor as a coffee table and keep it on hand in the event I want to reverse it. Cost has to come down though.

Oh as far as why?
0-60 in less than 3 seconds. Maybe 2.
Never having to do an oil change
the list goes on, but 0-60 in less than 3 seconds.....

If I were looking for a small, fun car to drive around a small town for groceries or ice cream or to the beach or whatever, it kinda makes sense to get a small electric vehicle for that purpose. I’d rather drive an electric 911 than a newer electric car for that purpose. But if the 911 is otherwise in great shape, heck no.
