Guys check your fans my fan hub bearing went out I ordered a new hub bearing So today in prep for reinstalling everything I bead blasted the fan itself 😳

Here’s the crack so to me it’s a fan looking for a place to fly apart 😢

Inside cracks you may need to zoom in to see them

I remember when I wanted to have my fan power coated I told the guy to look for cracks I didn't even make it out of the place and he said like this, I had to get a new fan.

That’s a bit hard to not notice if it wasn’t covered in paint…. Great Catch!

I know it may seem a bit off-putting for some, but spray your belts with Dressing and the fine particles will find themselves clinging to the MAG and protect it. Yeah, it will look a bit 60/70’s Le Man 24hr racer, but it’s protected. I know a few that mist (very lightly and finely) a spray bottle with lightweight motor oil to have the fan induce and coat everywhere.

P.S. The alternator will be fine.

I had it tested and all is fine I’m replacing the voltage regulator and the capacitor while it’s out

It’s on the back side of the alternator close to the voltage regulator small black box single wire with a spade connector the plastic on mine rotted off

In this picture it is labeled not my picture but from another Rennlister Superdylan I believe cost like 6 dollars online. A bunch of cars that use Bosch alternators use it

Thanks for the reply. I should have worded a bit different this one point. Did you not see the crack that is external facing on the fan prior to beading?

You got me thinking so I went back and looked at every picture I could find of the fan that I have and couldn’t see anything

The more I think about it I’m not so sure the crack isn’t new when I first took it out I took the shroud off first and was spinning the fan and you could clearly see a wobble in it so maybe a combo thing bad bearing 30 year old fan bearing starts to go fan cracks maybe Cobalt will chime in he knows his magnesium castings

Got it. That’s pretty interesting that the paint was laid in such a way to cover that crack without a impression of sorts showing.

Fatigue instead of the actual casting based upon what you say “wobbling.” The Mag takes a lot of heat on the cool down and thermally expands a lot.
