For some time now we have been inspecting and restoring fuel lines on all 9m engine builds. This is the only way to avoid leakage and ultimately fire incidents as had happened to the unfortunate Targa. Even when original factory fuel lines look ok I will guarantee that they need replacing. On one fairly recent 964 based 9m Car build, all lines looked fine when assembled, but as soon as we added fuel and pump pressure, every single crimped rubber joint leaked. Needless to say we refurbished every pipe after finding the original rubber had shrunk, allowing the pipe to turn under the crimp. So that's the test - remove the pipe and if you can rotate the fitting whilst holding the tube, you need a replacement.

We invested in a hydraulic crimp machine but if you don't happen to have one in your garage or shed (!) a local hydraulic hose specialist should be able to help. The cost of a new set of engine lines for a 964 is around £1000, we charge less than half that for a fully refurbished set.

This is a fuel line removed from a 90,000 mile 993 Turbo engine. The rubber had gone brittle to the point of cracking.

Original fittings are removed for re-plating

Replacement fuel hose is a much higher grade and suitable for all fuel types

Full set of refurbished hoses for a 964 engine

Look great when fitted.

All the fuel lines were replaced in 2016 when engine was rebuilt and refreshed. Not sure cause of fire.

Those pics make me cringe.. that really sucks. Sorry to hear about the misfortune. I have a targa and can only imagine the feeling. Were the replaced fuel lines OE polyamide or hose replacement with crimps?

Mike at Autobahn will have all those parts readily available along with body panels. Give him a call, he’s great to work with.

How much should one expect to pay a competent air-cooled indy for a complete fuel line upgrade/refresh? My '90 964C2 occasionally smells of fuel while driving and now this fire thread is making me nervous.

Just do it !! The indie doing my 964 rebuild had his local hose rebuilder do all of the motor compartment lines for under $300. Cheap enough.....

Thanks for the info. I'm going to get this scheduled this week. I caught a '67 Chevelle SS on fire long ago via a 4" piece of cracked rubber fuel line, so this thread speaks to me in a very personal way!

I have an intake system off a 91 C2. Also some odds and ends that you might be able to use. PM me a list of what you are looking for and I will check and see what I have.

Just picked up a 94 RSA - I think I can see the tag on the fuel line with a date of 10/93 - so I'm looking into how not to create a BBQ. Is this the main culprit here?

Sounds like you have been working on it - have any pictures of the progress? Better yet, did you determine what you think actually did cause the fire?

Also, did insurance help out?
Thanks!
