Default Hagerty vs. Leland West

Happy Monday,

I am planning to finally make the switch to a Collector's Insurance for my 964 Targa
I am looking at Hagerty and Leland West
Does anyone have some real life experience when they needed to get a claim paid with either of them?

Thanks

I left Haggerty after they tried to raise my rates 2 years in a row. Did a lot of research and decided to go with American Modern for my 5 car collectors policy with agreed value on all. Had a major accident where one of my cars was totaled & they paid out the full agreed value without question, within 2 weeks. They also don't seem to impose the restrictions that other companies do.

Switched from Hagerty to Leland West this year, premium was less for higher value. I have had no claims with either carrier.

I've had 3 cars insured on a Hagerty stated value policy for several years. Fortunately I've had no accident claims, but my two towing claims were both completely covered with no issues. The Hagerty magazine is a good read. My State Farm agent uses Hagerty for his collector car. Sounds like there are several companies to consider.

I decided against Leyland West after a terrible customer service experience. Rude and uniformed- I took my business to Hagerty.

How did the American Modern rates compare with Hagerty?

I had American modern on a previous car. I sold the car and told the buyer who I used for insurance...and he used the same. 2 weeks later, totaled the car. They paid out 100% without much hassle.

I shopped the hell out of collector insurance (had the 993 race car with GEICO and liability only ) and settled on Heacock. So many of them were just too restrictive based on the following: no trips, no errands, no transportation coverage, must be kept in a locked garage at all times (will not work if I take the car on trips); FFS, why bother having a fun car at all? My driving record is spotless, I haven't had an accident in twenty plus years, I'm in a very low-risk age category, I live in a low crime area, etc.

Heacock, 800-678-5173. I worked with Heather.

I just got a favorable quote from Heacock. Thanks for the tip Mark. Also note they offer storage, transport and paddock coverage for race cars and trailers for those of you who sport both a street and race car.

Hmmmmmmm, but on their web-site I read this:

Vehicle Usage “The Collector Vehicle Lifestyle”

  • The vehicle is always kept in a fully enclosed, locked, and private garage whenever the vehicle is not being driven.
  • The vehicle is primarily use for car shows and hobbyist activities with occasional pleasure use. The vehicle should never be used for back-up transportation or errand running.
  • The vehicle is only driven a limited number of miles per year

That's not what my policy states, IIRC. For certain, I have a limited mileage policy of 3000 miles per year.

I've mentioned this before in another insurance related thread. I switched to Grundy this past year after shopping Hagerty/Leland/Safeco etc. I have $60K agreed value, no deductibles and unlimited mileage. Car needs to be garaged when at home but if I'm on a trip and the car is parked outside I'm still covered. Can't be used as a daily driver and all drivers in the household need to have a car. All this for ~$600/yr. It was by far the best deal I found.

I "suspect" that the garaged when home requirement is due to the possibility that your homeowners insurance would need to be exhausted first in the event of theft or damage...don't quote me on that but it's worth looking into this and if your homeowners policy potentially should be updated to cover.

I had to leave Hagerty as well as they raised my rates and then they also did away with the installment payments and wanted payment in full. I switched to Leland and raised the agreed upon value with the same price as Hagerty was with the same type of coverage. The car needs to be in a garage and has limited mileage allowance. I could add on driving to work use for an additional fee.
Both my cars (1990 Carrera 2 and 2004 Cobra = $ 66.75 a month)

No claims ever filed and hopefully never have to.
