Default HELP 1991 964 C2 Wiring Harness

Hi Guys! I'm new here... its my first post so please take it easy on me. My husband's baby is a 1991 964 C2. It has been kept in the garage and rarely driven. So it is in pristine condition. (well, atleast it was) I am reaching out to you because I want to turn my husband terribly bad day we had today into something better and surprise him by taking on a secret task of fixing the "car". I don't know where to turn to ask without him finding out my plan of fixing it for him. He is devastated.

Ready to hear what happened......
Well, it wasn't my finest moment in the history of our marriage. I decided to store the birdseed in the garage this winter so I could easily fill the feeders and not freeze by trekking to the out building. I thought I was doing a great deed by taking care of the birds. Little did I know about other animals that like bird seed especially during the winter. MICE got into the garage!!!! Yeah, that oh crap moment is coming. After we discovered the findings of these mice, my husband went over to the car to remove the cover and make sure it was ok. He checked the trunk; phew, that looked fine. (me thinking we are going to be ok, no problem). He opens the driver door to look inside and everything is perfect just as can be. Opened the engine area........NO!!!!!!!! This huge family of mice destroyed the wiring harness!!!! Back there in the right corner area they nested and chewed on the wires, its where it enters into the engine area. They chewed some of that black foam stuff at the top around the filter area.

I googled to see what I can read about wiring harnesses and it looks like I can buy a new one from Kroon. What kind of costs might I incur taking it to a reputable shop to fix this? Any advice on a corrective plan, what I should do, how to do it? I feel responsible for this not to mention how bad I feel for having bird seed in the garage.

I dont know much about cars but I know how much he loves the Porsche; I just like to drive it on that rare occasion. So I am reaching out to all you experts. My husband is still processing this whole situation and has no idea I am doing this.

Thanks everyone! Sorry to be lengthy and a doozey as my first post. Heck I guess, when you're gonna do something go all out. I think I knocked it out of the park.

Well that's a great surprise I'm sure !
Fortuneately that area of the harness right rear of engine compartment doesn't carry but a few circuits , the rear lights , a/c compressor
oil level sending unit and possibly the rear tail , could be a few others I'm missing not certain.
The cost for this harness which is the body (chassis) harness is substantial new and could still be size able used $4-500 used , 2-3,000 new .my suggestion is to try and have the few wires likely involved repaired , the car probably will start I would check that after checking other areas for damage .
it will require a knowledgeable tech familiar with the various circuits but not to involved to handle , done myself with little to no formal
Training all is not lost but an insurance estimate may total the car so be careful haha ...Bert

Post Pics? Some of the harness areas have plugs. So there are sub harnesses that are easier to fix or replace.
if it’s not bad you can repair
the black foam thing is not a big deal. Bit of work to replace but much easier than wires.

advise you remove the negative battery connection before you have it checked out. you will want it towed. Chewed wires and current can cause a fire.

where are you located?

Thanks Bert! I don’t care about the cost so should I just order from Kroon...if you were in my shoes? Easy way out for me would to buy the piece however then say “here honey, you figure out how you want to put that in.”

UNFORTUNATELY I am in WV. The closest dealerships is an hour away and three hours away. I am open to towing it anywhere.

I quietly snuck out to the garage to snap these.

For anyone that needs to know Irish Spring soap does not deter them. They did however eat the poison. I’ll let the husband discover the return. Maybe they are dead now.

Looks fixable. You’ll need to bring it to a specialist. Not necessarily a Porsche dealer but a good independent.

they’ll need to remove the grommet, pull it back and inspect it wire by wire. Then splice and repair each one, wrap it back up again.

I agree with this, definitely fixable and no need to purchase a new harness. Find a good independent shop and they will have it good as new in no time.

Guys thank you for thoughts and opinions! These are the times when I wish I did not live in WV so that I could locate a someone good. Time to get researching for someone in a 4 hour radius. I’m hoping I can pull this off.

I hate to pile it on but check for nests too. Look in the air box and on top of the cylinders under the cooling system tins. They’ve been known to get into heater ducting. Follow the droppings.
