Fuel efficiency, 9 mpg ???

Hi all,
I assume it's the O2 sensor, as it may be caught in open loop mode. Still get poor mileage. Anyway, thanks for all the replies. I have decided to fix the problem by trading the vehicle for a 996 cab of the same color, deal is 99% done. Sort of an extreme solution, but it goes a bit further back. Personal choice, I like the dash on my 964, but wanted a manual transmission. I also had a leak that would have cost a bundle to fix, etc. Again, thanks for all the support.

I get (13.5 Ltr/100Km) 20 MPG and thats doing a cold start 2.5 mi to work, and a 2.5mi cold start to home typically, OK thats at 30-40 MPH (that why I HAVE to go out for a good long blast at weekends ). Are you getting noticable amounts of black smoke from the exhaust ?

Nope, no smoke. My daily drive is a 55km round trip, and usually takes 80 minutes. So that's an average of 40kph, or 25mph. There's a lot of crawling, especially in the mornings.
The VW VR6 2.8 I used to have was a little better, but not much.

My average is around 13.0Ltr/100Km.
My best figure is 11.2Ltr/100km and my worse on the road is 15.4Ltr/100km.
During a few hot laps around the Nürburgring's Nordschleife I got 35.5Ltr/100km...
btw. it's a bit confusing for someone used to the metric system when you're using mpg since British and U.S. gallons are different.
My average of 13.0Ltr/100Km would be 18.1mpg(US) and 21.7mpg(UK)...

The issue seems moot now, but I would challenge that any of us could get an accurate consumption reading in a 2 mile trip, especially starting from cold. If we expect 20 mpg US (or 14 l per 100km), small variations in the actual fuel used for the trip, 0.1 gal (0.5 l), evaporation losses, richness at cold start, etc. will all contribute to a false fuel consumption. I had to convince my wife that her new Subaru was working fine, despite yielding half the expected mileage, because her trip was a similar 3 miles morning and evening. For longer trips, ciity or highway driving, it performs as expected.

Doesn't Chevron gasoline have Techron in it already? Do I need to supplement it with a bottle of Techron every once in awhile? Don't want to over-Techron and damage something, if that's possible.
I only do sporadic mileage checks; most of my driving is freeway speeds and I average 27 mpg.

my 90 c2 gets 26.5mpg (US) on my daily commute of about 50 miles each way in the mountains. My old VW GTi would get about 32mpg on this same commute. My current VW VR6(200 hp) Jetta gets about 30mpg. I am not displeased with its gas consumption at all.
