I’m also curious who did the engine work.
Personally if I were every to chase performance on an air cooled car it would be to have the engine balanced/blueprinted just as was done here. It provides a higher level of insurance that everything is correct and in the process improves performance while still keeping everything 100% stock.
I have to wonder how much this costs vs going the 3.8L, probably less but I really don’t know what balancing and blueprinting these engines entails.
