Default Aero mirrors tech question

Hi All,

I've finally bowed to peer pressure and decided to ditch the flags and get some Aero mirrors. Happily I found some used ones on eBay.de in the right colour, and bought them.

I now discover that they have no wires attached - instead some kind of 6-pin mini-DIN type circular connector

So - anyone happen to know the pin-outs so I can correctly wire them, and also, does anyone know if this is indeed a standard connector I can get from somewhere other than a Porsche dealer...?

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave

I have seen a few different plugs on cup mirrors and different coloured wiring, basically your best bet will be to cut both plugs off and just crimp the wires together. There are 6 wires to the mirrors, 2 for the heater and a positive and negative for each motor, you should be able to trace them back to the motor on each mirror. If you want the correct 6 pin small plug you would need to buy that part of the loom for a 993, but you would still have to mess about with the connections!!

911Pervy, (Pervy, or just Perv for short? )

Thanks - I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that it would be easiest just to rewire the mirrors completely with longer wires, and junk the connector altogether. Then just join up with the existing loom.

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave

When I did this job I junked the connector and used crimps to join the wires.

Cheers

Phil,

This is all your bloody fault!! Your article said it was easy!! I want an apology!!

Kevin,

Thanks - I'll have a look.

Think I should have done a bit more looking myself before posting this. Apologies for that.

Cheers guys

Dave.

Is it possible to take the existing wiring and plugs off the Flag mirrors and retrofit it to the aero mirrors? I have a set and need to get them painted first and them I get to join in the fun.

Hi Pete,

Can't say I've taken the flags off yet, but the pics in Phil's article suggest that there is no connector between the door and the mirror on the original loom. Seems you have to cut it, and join the wiring from the new mirrors one way or another.

That is what I found on my '91. The wires came out of the hole in the door and went straight into the flag mirror housing. With some trepidation, I cut the wire (as close to the flag base as possible) and some 45 minutes later was one happy camper as I'd gotten both mirrors on and, in addition to a weight saving akin to shedding a baby elephant and an aerodynamic improvement akin to the proverbial barn door, I had a much prettier car!

Hope you do too - and look forward to pictures in the usual stunning locations!

Just for reference, Phil's mirrors had some external cables like this...

Like these (on the teardrops)? - you cut off the white connector and then color match and join the wires to the ones........

....like these attached to the originals (you just cannot see where they connect as it is buried deep within the acreage of metal that is the flag mirror

No you are cool, just get a pair of needle nosed pliers and with a gentle but firm twisting action (ooooh, nurse! ) pull the white plug out and you'll end up like mine above. Then go to work cutting the white plug off etc.
