Default For a starter...

I don’t know which to use!

my g50 bell housing has a strange cutout where the starter goes. It seems it was done at factory but my other G50 does not have it?!

are there different sizes of starters for different G50s?

I don't remember seeing a cut out like that on my cars. What version of the G50 do you have? Can you take another photo pulled back a bit further to see more of the context? I'm wondering if you have the 87-89' G50 bellhousing. If you look at the first post in this thread, it looks similar to yours.

GBox's website lists the various versions of transmissions. http://www.gboxweb.com/g50specs.html

Thank you for chiming in.
Supposedly it is the G50/03 but on these old parts who knows...

The good thing is that I spoke to the gbox guy who rebuilt it and he mentions to have seen these cutouts before. Now to find a starter...

I will get a picture from further away.

There are two starters that I'm aware of. The first is for the 87-89 G50 and the other is the later 964 style. The 89 C4 uses the early style. See PET 905-05 #10 & 11.

Early style = 911-604-102-01
964 style = 964-604-104-00

Thanks Rob - really appreciated!

In the picture below you can see the cutout.

It looks like you have an early bellhousing but a late style starter. Does the current starter work ok? The shaft end is unsupported.

Yep current starter works. I guess then that I will need to buy the 911-604-102-01

Not necessarily. Remember, the 89 has a different flywheel too.

mmmmmmm

To give a bit of background, the starter is coming off of my 92 g50. This G50 is one I sourced in Italy and had it rebuilt to RS specs. Didn't come with a starter. The flywheel is part of the RS clutch and LWF kit for the 964.

My C2 is similar with a LWF and RS clutch. You will need to stick with the later style starter.

But this starter does not work with that bell housing.

I really do not want to swap all the internals from one G50 to another...

A few years ago, I had traded my 1991's G50 for a rebuilt unit. The first one they shipped to me was a G50 for an 87-89 and my starter didn't fit. I ended up shipping it back and they shipped me the correct model year and my starter fit correctly.

Not sure there is a starter that fits an early bell housing and a RS flywheel.

That is going to be a problem.

We have asked Patrick motorsport, please anyone chime in if you have any other G50 knowledgeable person we can reach.

The next step would be to swap the internals...not fun.
