I am not alone!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/575942-flywheel-clutch-kit.html
I
guess the issue is the starter gear which according to a post: " The setup i've seen is a bit odd in that it uses two ring gears (one to engage the starter and the other 964 part is used as a spacer), "

If that starter you have in the picture works why not just have that one rebuilt?

Because that starter does not work with the bell housing that I have.

Thanks - although I could not follow the link.

Anyhow let's recap for future kids that will look into this forum for that obsolete vehicle that actually requires the driver to drive that their granpa left them and are unaware of how it operates .

This is my starter from my 1992 964.

The problem is that when mounted on my other G50 box, which has a 87-89 housing, the shafts hangs out free like my xxxx under the shower. You can see on the far left in the picture below.

The correct starter for this bell housing is this one below, which obviously is too short for the 964 clutch and flywheel pack - but it works fine on the 3.2's.
Notice the end structure to hold the shaft in place.

So, yeah, need to find a way to hold that shaft up on my old, original 92 starter..

So, wallra, I bought one based on your comment (and my approximate judgment on the measurements) - arrives tomorrow. If it works I will be sending you a 6-pack of your favorite beer. I am not joking.

Curious: People have mentioned tapping on the starter motor to get it working again...
Which part of the starter do you tap on when you have starter issues. The bigger black cylinder or the smaller one?

Edit: Thanks for the answer Rob!

Tap on the small part. Its the solenoid. Think of it as a big relay. They tend to get sticky over time.

California Motorsports can tell you what needs to be done. I came across the same issue when I rebuilt my trans on a 1989 964 C4

You should be able to mount an additional (older style from MY89) starter ring gear on the front of the pressure plate?
