I have a tapping coming from my drivers side (rhd) lower valve cover. The clearances have just been set and a full service completed so fresh oil etc. I really don't want to dump my niece fresh Miller's oil after only a thousand miles but obviously need to check what's going on. Will I loose loads if I just remove the cover? Maybe if I jack the car up from the side to help retain the oil? Or am I Just gonna have to face facts and let the oil go? My car has no secondary silencer so access should be good, does the heat exchanger have to come off? Many thanks, Jim.

Just raise the car a little on the side you are going to remove. You don't need to go mad as you'll loose only a few drops.

I've reclaimed fairly new oil by thoroughly cleaning the oil drain area, and using a scrupulously clean drain pan.

Second that you can just raise the side you are working on a bit to keep the oil in. Did it on my 964 after I wasn't happy with a ticking sound after valve adjustment.
