This is the booklet i referenced. I don't have a pdf. And it's a little long to scan. But this is what you are looking for:
There are two earlier copies on eBay. These aren't 964 specific but the information is pertinent.

To weld it you would probably need to do it with the car loaded on the ground with the doors closed, or with a fully stripped and unladen shell (even stripped the shell could be sagging). Otherwise, welding it on an unladen car you would end up post-compressing the roof once the car is on the ground. Then the doors would probably never close properly, glass seals might not work, and the panel could buckle.
But as it is now, I imagine something can be done with the seals to fix most of the leaks and noise.

It starts dripping water every time it rains from the corners where the targa top, windshield, door come together. It is not a stream but enough to get my arm and pants wet. I usually stuff a towel in the corner held up by the sun visor. Not an elegant solution to be sure. Problem is that air is pressing water all over the place and it's not immediately obvious where the leak is so it's hard to reproduce the leaks with a garden hose.
I am intrigued by the d Moris hardtop idea though. Need to look into pricing and shipping options. Thanks for the suggestions.

The video is very helpful - I do speak German and happy to translate if someone needs it. I think I need to rename this discussion to something like " How to seal a targa top ". More to come

Thanks, I must have missed it the first time around. I don't know how much the other one was but I made what seems to be a more reasonable offer (at least to me), so we'll see.
EDIT: Went back and forth a couple times and made a deal with the seller. Thanks again for the heads up.

That video is excellent, the visuals are enough to understand the adjustments on the tops.

Does anybody know what kind of putty they are using for the seals? They only talk about permanently elastic (ie non hardening) putty that I assume will withstand head an cold - although weather in Germany is much more moderate than in parts of the USA. Glue is obviously weatherstripping glue and crazy glue.

All I know is that the black putty is a major PITA to clean, the previous owner used it copiously to try to seal the front. With every top removal I managed to get the putty all over my hands which was fun.
